Mostly simple basic food, but very reasonable prices. Especially for the soups! Just 30-35 pesos. The sopa ranchera was especially delish. Served hot (not luke warm like many places), it had chunks of zucchini, cheese and chicharrón in a tomato base. The bowl was lined in crispy totopes. Before ordering, i was presented a basket of fresh totopos with a great salsa picante and a guacamole salsa. The milanesa de puerco plate was huge! A pile of french fries perfectly cooked golden brown, a nice green salad with thick slices of tomato, cucumber and a big fat radish carved into a flower-- and 3 pieces of lightly breaded, thin milanesas. It was so much food, I took two milanesas and the salad home and made two sandwiches with a nice baguette from Boulec the next day. The service was efficient and very friendly. Even though they were closing in a few minutes, they let me order a chocolate con agua. It was hot, huge and delicious. Nothing gourmet here, but simple, basic, traditional food at good prices. I just wish they were open later...Five stars even though the food isn't "special", just a good deal for the price and...
Read moreTo put everything in the right picture: "El Biche Pobre" is foremost a restaurant with offers for locals. It has food that is typical for the region and doesn't care about the presentation of the food in a more spectacular way, that tourist my be expecting.
Our experience is based on being there with locals and therefore knowing what to ask for and how things were done in a more local way. It is quite common for breakfast to ask for a "combo", where you get a fruit platter, a hot drink (i.e. coffee refill), a juice and a dish of your choice. In our experience the service was very responsive and quick, bit of course not anything like in more touristic restaurants, where the experience plays a bigger roll.
Nevertheless, the food is very delicious if you're already used to Oaxaca and Mexican food. Therefore, I highly recommend this restaurants to locate, especially die to the location in one of the best neighborhoods in Oaxaca: Jalatlaco. And for tourists, I recommend it as an option after you have got used to Mexican breakfast, because prices are fair and the...
Read moreVery clean and qualitative restaurant. Also liked by the locals. They prepare authentic Mexican foods and almost all their dishes are fresh and homemade. We heard about this place multiple times, both relatives of us told us about it, and some tourists we met around the Oaxaca city recommended it to us as well, so we gave it a try. We're glad thay we followed up their tips. The food is really nice and they vegetarian dishes as well (which is rare to see in Mexico). They serve guacamole as a free starter, but the guacamole tastes a bit weird in my opinion, seemed like it was mixed with water or something. The staff is friendly and polite, they obviously know what they do. We asked them if they could modify some of the dishes to our likings, but they couldn't - no idea why though, because everything is prepared in the kitchen, also, there is no WiFi connection in the restaurant. Overall a...
