Don Juan Cocina de Autor — Restaurant in Oaxaca

I really wanted to love this place. We love Oaxaca food and were excited to try this new place. We come to Huatulco quite often from the US. We stayed at the hotel Eden Costa and were convinced by the alluring foody menu and vibe. The restaurant that night was not crowded, only another table of tourists, like us - but I wanted to still give them a chance. I ordered the Cacao salad and the fisherman ceviche. Both were good, we had a good dinner overall. BUT 4 hours later, I was sick as a dog and regretted my decision to try this new place. The following day I told the waiter and he just smiled at me and walked away, saying he would eventually tell his boss. This was the only waiter who spoke English. I wanted to tell him in order to prevent other customers to get sick from that food. I don’t like to leave bad reviews, especially with new places but the staff didn’t seem to care at all. I was up all night, this was the only food l ate that night. I was not impressed by the lack of empathy and the staff the next day, they simply didn’t seemed...

Excellent food and service. We had the escargots, the nem, the salade Nicoise, the goat cheese salad, the skirt steak, the ossobuco. Everything was perfect. And two bottles of Montepulciano 2013 excellent red wine and very reasonable price. Alexandre, the son of the owner, was very friendly and very attentive to every details. Ariel, his helper, was also very attentive. Overall nice wedding anniversary diner at a surprising reasonable price. The quality and presentation of the food is surprising for Huatulco. Really a hidden gem. We will come back for sure. October 2019. We went back and very disappointed. There are new owner and chef. The service is not the same as before and the quality of the foods is way down. There is no more a wine list. So too bad I do not recommend this...

All I can say is… WOW. This place deserves to be on Chef’s Table. Every dish was uniquely prepared, made with high quality local ingredients, creative, DELICIOUS, and presented beautifully. This chef is an absolute creative artist. I will be recommending this place to all my family that frequently vacations in Mexico. I came here for 3 separate meals because it was so good. I wish I could have tried every item on the menu. This is a 10 star rating!!!! I am sad I don’t live here solely for the reason that I can’t come back here on the regular. I am now a big fan...
