Fonda Típica La Poblana — Restaurant in Puebla

Highly recommended. I was only in Puebla for a couple of days, but this Fonda Tipica La Poblana definitely delivered my favorite dining experience. It was superior to a fancy restaurant I visited the night before (which many reviewers toutes as THE restaurant in Puebla)--and at a fraction of the cost. We enjoyed: two aguas de jamaica; an order of guacamole; an order of chicken and rice with mole; an order of chile en nogada. Everything was delicious, especially the chile en nogada. The service was very friendly (gracias Miguel!), and the outdoor tables were very peaceful and cool. We even took away some of their incredible, savory sweet mole to enjoy back home. We spent about $700mxn (CASH ONLY), and it was well worth it. (Oh! And the delicious tortillas...

Be aware that this restaurant is cash only The food is very tasty, good prices and excellent service with a very friendly waiter… until we came to pay- this is when we found out it was cash only. Whilst not really a problem as such (and we could have checked before ordering), it was more the attitude of the staff that was a bit strange- they said if we don’t have cash, they will take us to the nearest ATM - not the one of my bank- so we can withdraw the correct amount and hand it to him straight away. It felt a little threatening and his demeanour definitely changed from being very friendly. It’s a shame, because everything was excellent up...

At my hotel, it was advertised as a traditional and authentic restaurant to visit. Inside, there were only two tables available for customers. The food was good but nothing special, the restroom was in the middle of the restaurant and it didn't have a sink, 10% of the bill was added for service. What disturbed me the most was that, while the waiter ran around overworked and visibly overwhelmed, the owner/manager stood at the door entrance with his hands in his pockets, not moving a finger.
