Taô Garden — Restaurant in Île des Terres Basses

It was our last night in SXM so we decided to try something new. We were staying nearby and saw the reviews for Tao Garden and had to see for ourselves. It was the best meal we had this trip, and we've been to some of the top spots. We started with the vegetable gyoza, usually something simple and unassuming - boy were we wrong. They set the tone for the entire meal, so tasty, cooked just right with green onions and hoisin sauce for dipping. We then split a huge bowl of Tom Kha soup, which is our favorite, and it was so flavorful and enjoyable. We then got the red curry... Best I've ever had, hands down. We were so full that we said we were going to skip dessert, until we saw them deliver the mango sticky rice to the table next to us, whereupon we had to have some. No words are left to describe how perfect this dessert was. It was unbelievable, spectacular, amazing, and delightful. Yes, I did not actually eat their food, so it may be quite good. But we never got that far because I noticed something I have never seen in any of my travels in SE Asia (I am Filipino). This place actually does not include RICE in ANY of their dishes. But they will charge you $4-$5 for a small portion on the side (not caviar, RICE). If you are from South or SE Asia, you will know that this is rather insulting. I was however reassured by the French waitress that all this was "normal". Horrible rude unprofessional and dishonest service. Server forgot to add shrimp to the dish. Didn't check in to ask how the food was. Then they tried to charge for veggies for two dishes that included veggies already in the price and we didn't ask for more.

Waitress didn't apologize about missing the shrimp and argued with us about the extra charge and acted beyond rude.
