Permit me to recount my recent foray into the realm of gastronomy at the esteemed establishment known as "Cornerstore" situated in the northern reaches of Amsterdam. With great expectations, I ventured forth, eager to sample the offerings of this purportedly avant-garde locale.
Alas, as I crossed the threshold, I found the ambience to be striving tirelessly for an edginess that fell woefully short of its intended mark. In truth, it bore a closer resemblance to the pedestrian environs of a Domino's Pizza establishment than to the lofty heights of culinary sophistication one might anticipate.
Alas, my initial enthusiasm was somewhat dampened by the service, which I must regrettably describe as rather fascistic in nature. The staff, while undoubtedly efficient, seemed to adhere to a rigid code of conduct that bordered on the authoritarian. One cannot help but yearn for a more congenial approach, befitting the genteel atmosphere one expects from an establishment of this caliber.
Yet amidst these shortcomings, I must extend my sincerest commendations to the diligent denizens of the kitchen. Their indefatigable efforts were manifest in the dishes presented before me, each a testament to their tireless dedication and culinary acumen.
Furthermore, I must express my gratitude for the conscientious attention paid to my companion's latex allergy. The swift and discreet manner in which it was addressed speaks volumes to the professionalism and meticulousness of the establishment's staff.
Regrettably, however, the evening was not without its disconcerting moments, as a most uninvited guest in the form of a mouse made its presence known, apparently indulging in the dulcet strains of Michael Jackson's music. Though I must confess a certain admiration for the creature's impeccable taste, its presence nonetheless cast a shadow over the proceedings.
In summation, while "Cornerstore" may boast a diligent kitchen and attentive allergy management, it falls short of the expectations one might harbor for a truly superlative dining experience. With adjustments to its ambience, service, and pest control measures, it may yet ascend to the echelons of...
Read moreWe were looking forward to trying out cornerstone for a birthday meal. Unfortunately when we arrived we were left to stand in the entrance for 10 mins with no sign of our table being ready (even though we had booked and paid a €40 deposit). When we asked the male server (Paul Mescal wannabe) at the entrance when the table would be ready he gave a very sarcastic response, (insinuating I should chill out...) and then asked me where I was from. The food was OK but in relation to the price was extremely underwhelming. The cauliflower dish was watery and bland, as if it had just been boiled, drained poorly with no seasoning. The poussin was one of the better dishes but at €19 for a small chicken I can honestly say I've had better at Nandos. The atmosphere was nice. Incredible hifi system and DJ booth steered by selectors with great records. However it did feel a little pretentious and this was led by the feeling you got from the staff who come across young and arrogant. To be fair the gentleman who served our table was helpful and pleasant but still managed to overcharge us for drinks we didn't have. Overall extremely disappointing, extremely underwhelming and a sense of style...
Read moreOur booking was made for us by relatives in Amsterdam whilst we were visiting from the UK, after the CornerStore had been recommended by their work colleagues.
We were warmly greeted on arrival and promptly attended to by waiting staff who took the time and trouble to explain the menu. Throughout our visit all staff were suitably attentive, friendly and professional. They certainly added to the great ambience of the restaurant.
We have been vegetarian for over 35 years and have eaten many dozens of vegetarian meals in restaurants in many European countries and beyond. We both opted for the set menu at the CornerStore . Absolutely, every dish was presented beautifully and was outstandingly delicious, with lovely textures and flavours. It is very rare during a meal that every mouthful of every dish, including the bread with goats milk butter, tastes so superb. The food was certainly up there with the best that we have eaten.
We had a great evening and as we visit Amsterdam regularly, we will most certainly be back. We highly recommend the...
