Our roommate invited us for his birthday dinner. We came a bit early and were appointed to the table, we could pick any of the available beer tables of 8px. Since there came no one to take our drinks orders we ordered a bottle of wine at the bar which was nice. 20 minutes after our reservation was made, we found out that our roommate (who made the reservation) was instructed at the door to pick any table. So he was sitting in the back of the restaurant on a different table only to come to ours 20 minutes later. When we were all there he orderen one of every starters. Since my partner and I are vegan we couldn't try everything but the bread and artichoke were very tasty!
When we came to the main course we asked the waitress if it was possible to order one of the main dishes to make it vegan as there was no other option besides the bread and artichoke. She told us no, since everything was already made with butter beforehand. She told us that we should've mentioned it in the reservation beforehand. My roommate who made the reservation said that at no time they asked for dietary requirements, so how would we have known that we should've said so before?
Since there was no way that we would be catered for, we decided to go to the neighbors at garage noord for a delicious roti. After finishing the roti we came back to the rest of the group. Their mains were on their way. We joined for another bottle of orange wine, which was again very tasty.
So tip for anyone with any dietary requirements, check before coming if...
Read moreSkate cafe manages to walk the thin line between hippy, grunge-y, and strangely enough, elevated. Located in an old factory or commercial building, the walls are covered in graffiti, exposed steel beams are present, and bizarre decor, such as a small car hang from the roof. The dining room itself, has a floor of bare concrete but with elegantly set tables. And probably most distinctive of all, there’s a u-pipe for skaters, although it’s primarily used before dinner time. The bar, kitchen, u-pipe, and dining area are all in this same large room. You can watch your chef assemble your dish, your bartender mix your drink, and a skater do a drop down simultaneously. When you need to use the bathrooms, it’s clear that this location turns into a night club, with graffiti and stickers galore all over a very bare-bones bathroom. The food itself was delicious, I ordered the herb butter and bread, the octopus, and the redfish. Despite being a local’s spot (no English anywhere to be found) the waitstaff was more than accommodating and kind, even going as far as to find a sparkler to stick in a brownie for our friends birthday when we asked, even though this isn’t a tradition in the Netherlands. Only critiques would be the food being on the slightly pricier side, some cocktail glasses not matching the drinks which they contained, and our table having a bit of a wobble. But overall, a fantastic and unique experience, and would come back anytime I’m in...
Read moreCame for a Cory Hanson gig. At the terrace a guy shouts that we should all go inside or we will left outside. Was here once before when some friends played so I head to they spot where they were selling tickets then, but the bouncer at the door pushes me out. Apparently the box office is now at the other location. He gives a vague instructions, irritated as he thought I was trying to enter without paying. I am twice his age at least. Walk around the building to the box office. The entrance has three lines divided with metal fences. At least 200 people could cue in line at the same time. I am the only one cueing. At the end of the line there a chains that prevents you from going further to the box office. "Good evening dear people, where can I buy a ticket?" I say trying to lift the chain. Visibly irritated girl in full disco makeup/regalia disrespectfully shouts at me that I should wait. I am trice her age (and alone in the que). I look in disbelief, she shouts once more, without any hint of respect. I look at her and mutter "I am too old for this", turn away and go home. Will not be...
