Sepia — Restaurant in Groningen

It was not a surprise lunch (which it had been described as), it was a true symphony of tastes and flavours.

While I like writing good reviews I never do this for no reasons. I also tend not to use superlatives much. On this occasion I can hardly not use them.

Back to Sepia: it was a lunch by name only, probably mainly because it started at 1pm. I would describe it as a three hour concert of seven culinary movements, with a theme of amazing and very Dutch (in a modern, somewhat cosmopolitan manner) combinations of textures and flavours, all with perfectly chosen wines. The marine motifs interleaved with bucolic and herb garden ones. Very clearly there is much skill and magic involved. If you position yourself right in the moderately sized and tastefully decorated interior you can see some of that magic happen, at least to some degree.

Top level food in a classy, non-pretentious and very friendly atmosphere is probably how I would formally describe the experience. But I really don’t think it is possible to give it justice in words - just book a table and experience it would...

WOW! I was totally blown away by my experience in Sepia. The food was outstanding, visually appealing and accompanied by an explosion of flavour on the tastebuds. The unique combinations of food pairings were a true delight to the senses - a work of art. A theme which stood true across each course was the layers of flavour. Each dish was paired with a wine which worked perfectly to complement the food. The service was fantastic; friendly with an informative description of each dish and its accompanying drink. This 4-course lunch had a lovely progression and was delicious, fun and adventurous. Every few weeks the menu is changed, so you always have an exciting reason to visit again!! Although it was my first time in Sepia, it is definitenly not my last....

Wow. This has been a truly pleasurable journey for us. My friend and I have celebrated the submission of his PhD thesis so we chose the restaurant wisely. And we weren’t wrong about it.

Entering the space, immediately we felt welcomed. The place radiates warmth and groundedness. The composition of food was multifarious, both in terms of taste and texture.

We can’t wait to get back to this place soon.
