Average inauthentic Thai food bad value for money

We went here as a couple for dinner. This is the only Thai restaurant in Laren en Het Gooi area. We never ate here before so we gave it a try. The prices first of all are on the high side. About 30% more expensive than average. This is first of all not a major problem, if the service, interior, dining ware and food are of high quality. However, we didn't feel this was the case after the soup and a starter came on table. 1. The dining hardware is average to poor quality. 2. the portions are too small for the price. The soup was like half filled and the ingredients were of poor quality. Chicken meat was just chicken breast meat overcooked. My wife's starter were two vietnamese rolls with shurimi stick inside. This is NOT authentice Thai food at all. But a type of Eastern fusion thing. Kinda disappointing. 3. The interior was cozy and the service is good though. Can be quite hot because of the open kitchen, so beware of this. 4. Then came the main course, which were prawns in sweet-sour sauce and a beef with with asparagus. The portions became a bit bigger now and we got it with jasmine white rice. The rice was dry and on the hard side, not soft and fragrant. The dishes lack sophistication and the variety of vegetables in it. The dishes are very plain in taste and looks. Also, the food is on the salty side with a bit too much MSG in it. We got very thirsty afterwards. Also the beef was dry-ish and of average quality. This for about 25 euro's of one main dish! 5. The flavour and ingredients are average. If I was blindfolded, I would think I was eating Chinese food, honestly. So, this so-called Thai restaurant is not authentic Thai food, but a fusion restaurant of average quality and dining experience for a too high price. I would say, like others have pointed out. I would avoid this restaurant and spent my money on...

Bangkok in Laren – een Thaise verrassing van jewelste

Ik ging uit eten bij Restaurant Bangkok in Laren. ‘Bangkok’, dacht ik, ‘da’s ver weg.’ Maar nee hoor, het was gewoon in Laren, lekker dichtbij. Nou ja, relatief dichtbij, als je het vergelijkt met Thailand.

Ik stapte naar binnen en voelde meteen… ja, hoe zeg je dat… warmte. Niet alleen van de keuken, maar ook van de mensen. Jennifer en Roy zwaaien hier de scepter, en dat doen ze met een glimlach waar je spontaan trek van krijgt. Het ruikt er heerlijk, naar kruiden die je in de supermarkt niet zomaar vindt, en naar iets… iets spannends, iets dat je nog niet kent, maar waarvan je wéét dat het lekker is.

De grote twijfel

Dan komt het menu. Dat is een moment waarop je even diep ademhaalt. Want wat te kiezen? Alles klinkt alsof je het móét proeven. En ik ben maar één mens. Maar goed, ik ben dapper. Ik begin met de Yam Gai Douw. Da’s een salade met gebakken ei, rode ui, sjalotten, koriander en limoensap. En laat me je vertellen… dat limoensap hè, dat doet iets met een mens. Het geeft een frisse oppepper alsof je ineens in een zomerbries staat.

Toen kwam het hoofdgerecht. Gebakken kip met cashewnoten. Zo’n gerecht waar je mee wilt trouwen. De kip is mals, de cashewnoten knapperig en die saus… die saus! Zoet, hartig, precies goed. Ik proefde ook nog een hapje van de gebakken visfilet in tamarindesaus, en als die vis kon praten, had ‘ie gezegd: “Blijf nog even.”

De curry die je niet vergeet

Mijntafelgenoot had de groene curry. Je neemt een hap, en ineens sta je in Thailand. Nou ja, in je hoofd dan. De kruiden dansen de cha-cha op je tong, een beetje pittig, een beetje romig, en met een vleugje magie. Een curry zoals een curry bedoeld is.

En weet je wat zo mooi is? De kokkin, Poo, kookt met een passie alsof elke dag een feestdag is. En dat proef je. Alles is vers, alles klopt.

Heb je moeite met kiezen? Dan zijn er rijsttafels – zo’n tafel vol lekkers, waarbij je eigenlijk niet hoeft te kiezen, maar gewoon mag genieten. En genieten, dat doe je hier sowieso.

Conclusie

Restaurant Bangkok in Laren is een plek waar je niet alleen eet, maar beleeft. De sfeer is warm, het eten is goddelijk, en als je na afloop naar buiten loopt, heb je het gevoel dat je een beetje op reis bent geweest.

En het mooie is: je hoeft er niet eens...

The restaurant is easy reachable by car, and has plenty of parking spots in front of the restaurant. During the weekend I highly recommend to make a reservation.

The food is delicious! I can highly recommend the chicken with cashewnuts together with the fried rice. As a starter the 3 chicken snacks that you can share with another person.

The service was excellent, very attentive, kind, professional and quick in taking our order, serving the drinks and food. There are plenty of vegetarian options. The desserts can be upgraded, not particularly good. Constructive advice: add a chocolate lava cake to your dessert menu, with a side of strawberries and blueberries.
