Koya l Korean BBQ & Sushi — Restaurant in Leeuwarden

First the positives: The staff is very friendly and is always arround for help. Service is definetely a 5/5 here. The atmosphere is also very nice and cozy.

They have a good selection of soju and also cass for the actual korean drinks. The chopsticks are also from metal, as they should be for a korean restaurant. Furthermore, there is definetely some portion control so you do not order too much and waste less food, so that is a big plus.

The tablet system is also very nice, and lets you keep track of ordered items, which is something I had never encountered before.

And now to the negatives, the food is definetely lacking in quality. All the meats are thin cuts and of a rather poor quality. Normally you expect your pork belly, for instance, to be a thick cut and nicely marbled. Here we got a strip the size of a normal bacon slice with no marbling. The bulgogi pork did not taste like bulgogi at all, and was more similar to the kebab you can get at lidl. Similar things can be said for all cuts of meat.

The kimchi was very watered down and definetely missed its unique flavour. Perhaps it needs to ferment longer or is watered down to make it more appropriate for spice-intolerant people.

The korean spicy chicken did not taste spicy at all and was more like sweet-sour sauce. It was also not seasoned well enough, similar to the ebi and dumplings.

Some additional comments: The grill itself is also not a traditional grill and you definetely miss the iconic chimneys here, although that is not necessarily a bad thing (since you don't end up smelling like smoke afterwards). Furthermore, you do not get a meat scissor to cut up your meat between you and your company, so that is something that can easily be improved.

All in all, the concept is there and it works well enough, but the quality of the food should definetely be improved to make it a worthy competitor to other korean bbq restaurants in the Netherlands. I certainly hope that improvements will be made on the meat quality, otherwise it will not be worth the price, especially compared to the other regional competitor...

Ik ben voor het eerst met 4 volwassenen en 2 kinderen bij Koya gaan eten. Bij binnenkomst word je warm en vriendelijke ontvangen. Je word netjes naar je tafel begeleid en alles wordt uitgelegd hoe het werkt. We komen bij veel restaurants door heel Nederland en Duitsland. Met andere woorden ik weet wat goed is. Ik begin even over de bediening. De bediening is vriendelijk correct en netjes. De producten worden bij naam benoemd en ze zijn snel met borden weg te halen zodat de gasten geen last ervan heeft. Tevens heeft de bediening hulp van een vriendelijke robot. Dat was een verrassing, we hebben dat wel een keer in Duitsland gezien maar deze robot was een nieuwe versie met oortjes. De oudste kleinkind vond het schitterend. Één van het personeel liet de robot extra naar onze tafel gaan voor de kinderen en gaf ook uitleg. Erg kind vriendelijk. De sfeer is erg gezellig als je wil kan je nog piano spelen in de hal. Nu het eten. Dat was heerlijk. Ik geef niet snel de volledige sterren maar ik kon niet anders. Het eten werd met veel passie opgemaakt en zorg gebracht. Zie foto's. BBQ in combinatie heb ik / we nog nooit gedaan. Dat was ook heerlijk. De geur werd door een afzuigsysteem bij de BBQ afgevoerd. Perfect!! Tevens ook geen veel warmte dat je zit te puffen omdat het elektrisch is. We hebben een heerlijke avond gehad en tot de volgende keer. Voor iemand die er nog niet is geweest of twijfels heeft. HET IS EEN AANRADER!!! Prijs verhouding is goed.

The atmosphere is cozy yet modern, perfect for a night out with friends or even a date.
