If you’re into beef with a view (and who isn't?), Gauchos aan de Plas is a pretty solid bet. Nestled right along the water, the location does a lot of the heavy lifting here—especially if you manage to snag a window seat or sit outside when the Dutch weather decides to behave.

As the name not-so-subtly suggests, this is a steakhouse. So yes, order the beef. Don’t get clever with fish or salad; that’s not what you’re here for. The food is decent—won’t blow your boots off, but it’ll satisfy any carnivorous cravings you brought with you. Think grilled, hearty, and no-nonsense.

The atmosphere walks a bit of a tightrope: friendly staff, casual cowboy-ish cow leather vibes, and all that—but then they go and set the tables like you’re about to dine at a Michelin-starred place. Linen napkins, fine glassware, the whole upscale pretense. It’s like a steakhouse in a tuxedo. Just... pick a lane, folks.

That said, service was on point—friendly, attentive, and knew the menu. No complaints there.

Pro tip: Go around sunset if you can. The view over the lake ("Plas" sounds way less appealing in English) is actually quite lovely, and it elevates the whole experience.

In short: good steaks, great view, a slightly confused identity—but worth a visit if you’re in the mood for meat...

We had dinner here with the five of us and enjoyed nice hospitality: very excited that the restaurant honoured our desire for a specific table. Fred is a wonderful host. All of us enjoyed our steaks; well prepared and cooked to our wishes. My rare steak I had to send back to be reheated, as it was only luke warm. After that is was good.

The veggies were disappointing (especially the green asparagus) to a point where I would not give more than three stars for this restaurant. The extra star is for lovely hospitality and going the extra mile for us. It made the evening special.

Not sure if I’ll be back...

Ik schrijf niet vaak een review, alleen vind het wel belangrijk om restaurants te helpen door feedback te geven. Dit is dus bedoeld als feedback om verbeteringspunten aan te brengen.

Vroeger kwam ik regelmatig bij Gauchos aan de Plas. Een vriend van mij en ik zijn beide dikke vlees liefhebbers. Bij Gauchos hebben we vele avonden genoten.

Ik vind alleen dat nu de kwaliteit van het eten ten opzichte van vroeger minder is geworden. De sfeer en de service is prima gebleven. Daar heb ik niks op aan te merken. Je zit er namelijk lekker. Het team is lekker jeugdig en prima vlot.

Als voorgerecht kreeg ik de coquilles met spinazie en daar zaten volgens mij nog wat zongedroogde tomaten bij. Dit bordje leek niet echt aantrekkelijk om op te eten. De coquilles waren erg klein, 3 stuks en ook flink beschadigd, dus stukjes uit de coquilles. Ik vermoed dat deze coquilles uit de diepvries komen. De spinazie was veel ten opzichte van de 3 coquilles die ik kreeg. Het gerecht is op zich prima, alleen denk ik dat er wel verbeteringen in vallen qua opmaak en fine tuning. Als je wat grotere coquilles pakt, mooi dichtschroeit op de presentatie kant. Een mooie citrussaus maakt, die wat dikker is dat die mooi om de coquilles blijft pakken. En gewoon wat kort gebakken spinaziebladeren erbij serveert, dan ben je al een stukje beter op weg.

Ik ben lamsrack fan, alleen deze was niet echt mooi gepresenteerd. Ik kreeg in totaal een halve, dus 4 kleine stukjes met een hele knoflook erbij en daar betaalde je 20-25 euro voor. Dat vond ik aardig fors, voor de presentatie.

Kortom, ik denk dat er meer aandacht wordt besteed aan de gerechten, dat het restaurant ook een stukke beter wordt...
