Kompaan Brewery is located in a two-story brick building in an industrial area. Despite its seemingly out of the way location, it is a rather popular brewpub. They have a terrific variety of beers and delectable smoked meats. Enter on the side of the building near the canal. Outside are several picnic tables, which are pleasant on a nice evening. The entrance is a windowed door in a retractable transparent garage door. Inside on the left is their walkup service bar, which is a 20' shipping container with a row of 20 protruding black tap handles. Chalkboards overhead list their offering of 18 house beers and one or two guest taps. They offer an introductory flight of 6 house beers and otherwise it is full or half pours. The beers are very good across a range of styles. My favorites were their Imperial Stouts. Let me describe the unique architecture of the place. It is a large warehouse style building with steel beam construction and a concrete floor. They've populated it with an arrangement of several stacked steel shipping containers, some with the sides removed to create an open space for dining tables. To the left of the bar is a space for their small bottle shop where they sell individual bottles of their beer. The second-story containers house several tables to supplement those on the ground floor. Dim background lighting and table candles create a cozy ambience, and lively classic pop music is playing. Opposite the bar are large windows that look into the brewery. They have good sized stainless steel brewing vessels on the left, and a row of 8 stainless steel fermenters on the right. In the back left corner of the tasting room is their kitchen, from which emanates enticing smoky aromas. Their BBQ centric food menu consists of pub snacks, charcuterie, salad, burgers, and a variety of meat entrees. I had their ribs, and I must say it was a perfect combo of dry rub and smoky dipping sauce, oh so delicious. The rib meat could have been more tender, but I only mention that to explain why these weren't the best ribs I've ever had in my life! The fries and coleslaw sides were also so good. I saw hamburgers passing by, and these mighty monsters looked delicious. The bartenders are great - friendly, proficient and helpful. This place fires on all...
Read moreWent there last Friday with a few friends. The place was quite busy but there were a few tables available so we sat down. As soon as we did, one of the waitresses came over and told us that the 5 of us couldn't seat on a 6 person table and therefore 2 of us had to seat on another table. When we pointed out that there were similar tables fully occupied, she said that they were all living together!!!! Since she insisted that we needed to be apart we decided to grab some beers, and go back to our canal boat and have them there. As we went in to the shop area, the same waitress decided to stop what she was doing, come to us and tell us that there could be only 2 persons in the shop area, when the surrounding area of the shop had more then 15 people (including staff) with no space between them (maybe they all live together!!) We really felt unwelcome mainly due to the waitress attitude! Good...
Read moreExcellent craft beers, and this is coming from a Pacific Northwesterner. Had a flight of 6 for €15ish, pity couldn’t choose, but it was definitely a good representation of the varied styles they brewed. The Blood Broeder, à Russian Imperial Stout with port is a 2017 European winner of this category. It was amazing, great depth of flavour. The place is a bit off central, no trams, just buses. But so worth the effort, or my 30 minute walk. Huge place in the industrial area, and was done artfully, with containers stacked inside a warehouse. Live music on selected days, and a large outdoor seating area make for a lively atmosphere. Burgers, skewers and small bites available. No cash, pin only....
