Claudes Kitchen — Restaurant in Christchurch

Claude is a celebration of homemade goodness.

It's kind of a small spot, around 20 interior seats, with about as many again outdoors. It was about 2°C when I wandered past, and so outside wasn't the go. The interior was bustling with a small rush of cheerful regulars, one of which I plan to be after moving to the area.

The breakfast brunch menu has about 10 items, with classic egg and bacon situations, French toast and corn fritters. Have no fear though, if you're after choice - the full-to-the-brim cabinets seem like the place where the chef gets to play around.

Because of the weather, I chose a simple Steak and cheese pie with an Americano to dine in. The pie was a lesson in pastry perfection - perfectly flaky on top, crisp and cooked through, no soggy bottom. You can always judge a baker by their pie, and a cafe chef by his eggs.

Claudes do amazing food at really reasonable prices with lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Their pies are amazing!!! Especially their mince, cheese and chilli and their chicken and basil pesto. Their mince and cheese is epic also. I rate their pies as the best I have had in Christchurch... and I've eaten a few pies from quite a few other outfits. A small place I have driven past many times & inside & out more space than you initially give it credit for. Menu was good if not overly fancy & my choice was absolutely filling, service was good pleasant & efficient & the prices were pleasantly surprising, I was blown away that they actually make their own chai - no powder - no syrup, actual leaves !!! Decor is nothing fancy but not unpleasant & certainly no complaints about the cleanliness. Although not jam packed there was a steady flow of patronage. Will be going back - if only...
