The Avonhead Tavern and One Good Horse Restaurant — Restaurant in Christchurch

We have been here many times. And we have to say, the service has been shocking each time. But this evening takes the cake. We arrived. We ALWAYS smile at whoever is behind the bar. The barman didn't seem to really care. This was confirmed when my husband was swiping his card. He just walked off. Went and talked to another staff member and never came back. We then went in to the pokie room. We got lucky. Very lucky. We won a jackpot. We collected. And we waited. I decided to go to the loo. There was the above barman talking at the end of the bar to other staff members who had obviously finished work, and another standing behind the TAB desk. Came out of the loo and back to my husband. Who said he had to go and ask for assistance. Said barman was gone. But other bar staff who had been behind the TAB desk, was talking at the end of the bar with the staff members who had finished work. Pretty shoddy hospitality. Such a shame guys.. we normally tip 10% if we win a jackie. But the service didn't warrant it. Didnt even come close . Doesn't take much to smile at the customers. The staff were lovely but the service was a little underwhelming. The bar had a nice atmosphere. We were disappointed with the wait time for our meals. We waited for well over half an hour for fish and chips and a med rare steak. I'm picking there must have been a mistake in the kitchen, maybe they never received our order, because as soon as I enquired where our meals were, the staff member checked with the kitchen and they advised it was on its way. I would have appreciated a bit more awareness from the staff so that I didnt need to approach them. They obviously tried to rush it out because my steak was well done on the outside and rare on the inside. It was also very chewy as they obviously didn't rest the steak after cooking. On a positive note, the fish and chips were amazing. Light fluffy batter and fantastic portion to boot. Also, the garlic butter for my steak was delicious as well. Chips were cooked perfectly as well. Hoping this was just a blip so will maybe give them another shot at a later date. I was happy that they did offer a free dessert...

Got these guys on day one of quarantine opening up which as expected there was an issue with the order process where we originally couldn't find my order after a few phone calls to and from the two restaurants we finally found it they apologized and sent it out then when it arrived everything was there but the garlic bread so I checked the receipt on the bag it had everything but the garlic bread on it but the price was the same as if the garlic bread was on after checking the menu again and double checking my math I called them and said that they forgot the garlic bread which I said if you want to send out a lone garlic bread that's alright with me but if you can't justify the fuel cost I'm happy to flick you my bank details to which the lady on the phone replied "we could throw in a couple beers as an apology" to which I said yes please now after a short wait they arrive at the door only this time with no beers and in my mind no apology therefore can't see me or my partner going back as we have tried this place twice and we refuse to be let down...
