I don't really like giving negative reviews, and maybe today just was an off day. My daughter and I dropped in for a light lunch today (we are from out of town and were in Pukekohe for a funeral). The sign outside said there was crunchy fried chicken eggs benny. That's what I ordered. What came was a chicken panini. I get that "benny" and "panini" rhymes a bit, but was speaking clearly when I ordered. The panini was dry, and the chicken was soggy, and there wasn't much to it. The coffee was barely lukewarm. The table still had crumbs all over it from the previous people. There was a solitary fly enjoying being locked in the dessert cabinet -- the fly would've given a five-star review if it wasn't so busy gorging itself on pastries. To top it off, the only restroom had an "out of order" sign on the door. Look, it wasn't a terrible experience, but I've been to Columbus Cafes elsewhere, and it's always been delicious, with a lovely aesthetic. Whoever is managing the franchise, may want to do a bit of a refresher...

My lemon tart (which was a lemon meringue btw) was good, fresh, well set, and the meringue even had a nice crust which was different but enjoyable. Some of the other items, however, were showing their age, with frosting that had dried out (usually takes a couple days) and just generally being a bit dry and old seeming. This is the first time eating out in NZ and totally enjoyed. The servers are friendly and the food is interesting. Particularly the chillies that come with the sandwich. My Americano was authentic and the staff even ask if I needed hot water to go with my coffee. Attentive!
