Last night I happened to be staying in Havelock North and wanted something quick, healthy and appetising for dinner. I walked across the road from my accommodation and ordered the fresh paper rolls and the pork salad - around $45 at the Thai Niyom. So the person serving was very friendly. I didn't realise initially but it dawned on me that there were many phone, online orders before mine. I was the only person waiting and it took around 30 minutes for the order which is ok - just... But I was so disappointed when the food finally arrived.. yes, all the ingredients are fresh but really $45 for a salad leaf, half a red onion, heaps of coriander, generous amounts of shop bought sauce and a very small amount of pork sliced super thin with the paper rolls that were a disaster, it wasn't the best experience. Sure everything tasted fine but the presentation was terrible. The rice paper didn't cover the rolls, they were laid across the veges and then tucked under, so when I picked up the rolls, they disintegrated. And perhaps too generous amounts s of red onion which overpowered both meals. Hey, I was hungry, I was happy to chow down. But I thought it was a stretch for the price and the wait time... I'm not a local, so I'm sure they don't care I'm not going back but if you're used to great Thai, sadly, this isn't the place... Or maybe it was an...
Read moreFirst and last time trying Thai Niyom this week. Spent over $100 on food for my partner and I (when we can regularly feed our whole family of 5 for less elsewhere!). I imagined we would have leftovers for lunch the next day etc. When it all arrived in a tiny bag I was so gutted. $15 for 4 pork dumplings seemed a lot, but I really wanted to try them. The sauce just tasted like lemongrass, and the dumplings were pleasant, but small and cold. Next was the Kor Moo Yang, which was supposed to be grilled pork, e-san style marinated with roasted rice jaew for $26. When it turned up it was a tiny amount of this overcooked dry unidentifiable meat with a few leaves of lettuce and less than a handful of shredded carrot. Last of all was crispy chicken stirfry for $29 which i ignorantly assumed would include some sort of vegetable... it did not, although thankfully it was delicious. I also some rice on the side for $4 to go with the chicken stirfry which was all clumped together and stodgy. I ordered two bottles of Lemon Lime & Bitters, which cost me $13.80, just to be delivered two small cans of L&P at no discount. Lastly I ordered 2 garlic roti canai for $13.80, which were cool and soggy, but had great flavour. I'm not usually one to leave a negative review, but i was left feeling really ripped off with what we received considering the amount of...
Read moreWent to Thai Niyom last night in Havelock North. I’ve been there quite a few times and I always forget to take photos. Always get the same thing because it’s so delicious, Krapao Duck, Thai Fried Rice and Chicken Cashew Nut. Last time I went I watched a dish come out to another table so thought I’d give it a go, so I ordered Thai Fried Rice ( I get this instead of plain rice), Gai Lan Pork Belly, Sizzling Pad Cha Lamb. Amazing food!! I could eat it everyday. ( A big shout out to Daisy, who works on busy nights, at the Thai Niyom Havelock, for the great service !) Now I live in Napier so bit of a drive but they also have a restaurant in Clive so in between Havelock and Napier called Er Dee Waa, same delicious food, lovely owner and staff at both places PLUS their on Uber so after a hard day at work...
