Shahi Dawat — Restaurant in Henderson-Massey

I had dinner there this evening and, unfortunately, found a long black hair in my lamb korma 🤮. This happened right at the end of my meal, which I had been enjoying until that point.

When I brought it to the staff’s attention, I was told the chef is bald—as if that rules out any possibility of hair ending up in the food. I have brown hair, and if there were even a chance it was my own, I wouldn’t have raised it. After inspecting the hair carefully, I can confidently say it wasn’t mine.

I simply expected better food hygiene and a more professional response.

The food is delicious. We've been going to Shahi Dawat for a long time and have always loved the food. Normally, we get takeout, but tonight, we decided to dine in. The dine-in menu is priced $2 or $3 more per item. We ordered two meals and two drinks, and the bill was $77 (that's $39 per person for one curry and one drink)! When our food came to our table, they only brought our one rice. When we asked for a second rice, they charged us extra for it! As a picky eater, trying somewhere new is always overwhelming. But Shahi Dawat has very quickly become our choice for a great Indian meal. The chicken tikka is by far my favourite, and one of the best in Auckland (I recently even had this meal at Cassia, and it was extremely average compared to Shahi’s).
