Opononi Tavern — Restaurant in Kaikohe-Hokianga Community

The worst dining experience I’ve had in NZ.

The seafood chowder we ordered wasn’t available. After an hour of waiting we received part of the food we had ordered. Including the take away pizza we had ordered for someone else which in my mind shouldn’t have come until we had received our food for the table.

Then we discovered human hair in our raw fish.

Everyone at my table had eaten and I was still waiting for mussels in a Thai broth and salt and pepper squid. We asked 2 staff members for an update on the order. After 1 hour 20 minutes of waiting we took the table number to a staff member directly who quickly came out with the food. The salt and pepper squid was basic on a basic salad and the MUSSLES WERE FROZEN SOLID.

IF you are considering dining here expect to wait a long time and only order pizza.

Bartender taking food orders had bad customer skills, wasn't listening properly or very attentive. Waited maybe almost an hour for our food and when I asked where is the burger we were told they don't have any pulled pork burger and someone from the bar was supposed to tell us. No one told us. So they gave us free calamari instead and we got a beef burger. Burger was yuck, calamari was yuck and the chicken drumsticks looked gross. The DJ was also playing the music sooooo loud where the seating area is for people to eat. Also we asked the waiter for cutlery and he said its at the bar rudely. I can’t even any more with this place, feedback has been the same for a while now, yet they wilfully refuse to adapt and improve. After 2 years of giving them chances we have finally run out. You have no idea who the staff members actually are, they clearly don’t want to be there, the menu is obviously too big for the kitchen to cope with as a lot of items are never available, or come out completely differently to on the menu, and after too long a wait. The lack of any background music was weird, and no sound for a rugby game just added to an extremely strange atmosphere.
