We are traveling from wellington, comparing with Chinese restaurant/take aways in Wellington, I would not recommend this restaurant for below reasons: The environment is average, we sit besides the window, and I can see flys were around, and their spoons, folks, and chopsticks were already on the table all the time. Who knows how many times the flys were on those items. Bad impression. Over priced food. The quality of the food is at 'take away' level, but the amount of the food is not very much, it is OK for me and my wife, since we were not very hungry, but if you are hungry, don't come, otherwise you need to order more meals than normal. They have two menus with different price, eat-in menu is $8 more expensive than take away menu for each meal. They call it service fee. However the service is bear minimum. We ordered two meals and eat in, the cost is $72.5, so to sum up we paid $36.25 each person for a take away level food, and the amount of the food is not up to take away level. $16 out of $72.5 is 'service fee'. I don't like the way the server say things. As a trvaller when I first notice that they have two different price menu, and asked the server whether the menu price for eat in is different from the take away menu, the server just mentioned that 'there is a small difference'. Maybe I misunderstand what the 'small' means. $8 more for each meal is 25% - 30% more for a $24 - $27 take away meal. That is a lot! They treat me like an idiot and I need to work out the price difference myself. This Chinese restaurant is quite anti-chinese. I heard the customer next to us asked the owner if they are Chinese, she replied 'we are Hong Kong Chinese, not Chinese, there is a difference between Hong Kong Chinese and Chinese.' well I would suggest you to change your restaurant name to 'Hong Kong Chinese Take Away' but not use 'Chinese Take Away' because there is a difference. And I can conclude the difference is probably 'you can't speak Mandarin Chinese' and the meal is so much more expensive than a normal 'Chinese Take Away'. To conclude, I will never come again, because the average price for each meal is $36 on eat in menu, 25% of the price is service fee and the server treat you like an idiot. Environment is not clean enough and you may have health concerns when you see flys around and all the eating tools were already on the table in an open environment. Taste is average take away level but amount is less than normal take aways. Anti-Chinese owner. Over priced comparing with Chinese restaurant or Chinese takeaways in Wellington. Maybe this is not a proper comparison considering they are 'Hong Kong...
Read moreWent there with my family. As with many asian restaurants in this country, if you sit down to eat, you are charged about $8 more per plate (different amount depending on what you order) then if you get take-aways. We did sit down, since we were out of town. The food was tasty and fresh. I ordered something just because it said it came with "gourmet" mushrooms; however, I was really extremely disappointed, as they were just the generic white button mushrooms (they should really not advertise gourmet if it is white button mushrooms). My meal did not come with rice, and they did not tell me that, but I was so hungry when it came, I didn't feel like waiting to order rice; if you sit down and pay the extra $8/plate, it should really come with rice. The food was on the blander side, but it was fresh. They do have tofu, which many asian restaurants don't, which is a plus. The waitstaff was very friendly. The restaurant was clean. There are not very many dinner options in Masterton, as it seems that the city shuts down at 3 or 4 on a weekend. I would go back and order take-aways, as for what you get with sitting down, I wouldn't pay the...
Read moreWe were shocked by A. The service was at best untrained. I witnessed one of the staff member doing her best to inhilate a perfectly good bottle of wine. It gave me such cause for concern that we attempted to subtly stop her, even though it wasn't even my bottle of wine, as she attempted to rip the cork in half whilst she struggled to tear it from the poor bottle. B. The food was substandard, somehow they managed to burn the fried rice. C. We ordered the $30 each for four banquet paying for a fourth person as there were only 3 of us. The portions were not all for four as the lemon chicken was the same as the single serving of the person at the table next to us. So basically if it wasn't burned it was tasteless. We have paid less for better at places that charged far more reasonably at half the price. Between us we have been to numerous asian nations and have eaten from street vendors who were far more superior in skill and taste than what we encountered at Chans. Collectively we would not now nor would we ever recommend Chans as a place one might...
