So after having a yarn with the old man about Lam’s pies from Spa Rd Bakery, it became clear that I needed to return to try one their little gourmet numbers. Trusting his recommendation from being a seasoned Pieday Friday connoisseur, this time it was the Pepper Steak with Creamy Mushroom Sauce.
Me oh my, yes boi, this brick of a pie did not disappoint! A more aesthetically appearing exterior with the structural integrity of a Japanese skyscraper, this pie housed a delectable mix of well-seasoned peppery steak chunks with a smooth béchamel-like mushroom mixture. This provided an initial smooth flavour that immediately hits the palate when you thrust this bad boi into your pie-hole, followed by a punchy slap of pepper that’s not for the faint of heart. The pastry was also bang on, and the filling was very generous. At a price point around 7 bucks it’s also a banger of a deal! Worth noting that this pie was pared with a classic kiwi staple of a luminescent custard slice, providing that sugary, calorific balance to complete the meal.
Really can’t say anything bad about this pie, only could have been improved by an extra chunk or two of steak. A very respectable 9/10, would...

They just offer a really simple thing, we put delicious filling into our flaky golden yellow pies.
They also have sandwiches, fries, and other things but you come here for those pies!
It’s a cafeteria style service where you get a tray and just slide down from each heated display window to the next. You can pick out the delicious goodies that you want to eat and then pay at the end.
We absolutely adored their flaky crispy pies that had all sorts of different fillings. A lot of classic combinations such as chicken and mushroom, steak & kidney, smoked fish, sweet lamb curry, and butter chicken.
It’s hard to have just one.
I think my favourite thing I discovered there was their double happy roll. What makes it double happy? It was filled with ground beef on one side and creamy mashed potatoes in the other. Yum yum!
There’s nothing fancy about the food but it’s just great great comfort food at a great value. It’s bound to...
Read moreThe worst customer service ever. We recently had so rude customer service from the Asian looking lady in the cashier. We stopped there to grab some snacks on our way to Ruapehu and accidentally I dropped one of my food on the floor. When I picked the food up and wiped the floor ,the Asian looking cashier very rudely said " Give me that food ,I am going to chuck it in the bin" . I was almost in tears as she raised her voice in front of all the customers. To keep my peace of mind at ease I paid for the food I ACCIDENTALLY DROPED on the floor. The experience I had was so rude. Won't be...
