Taupo Rod & Tackle — Local services in North Island

We went to the store last Friday. We were told Taupō is good for fly fishing and we could rent a rod for $25. Everything sounded good so far so we decided to go back on Sunday to rent the rods.

When we went back on Sunday, there was another staff member. He insisted that we should use spinning rods and said that “you shouldn’t go to the streams”. When I asked why, he explained like they were restricting the number of people fishing there even though we saw people casting their rods out there instead of the locations recommended to us. We were also charged $35 for hiring a rod instead of the $25 stated two days prior. When we pointed it out, he was like “okay I will be the good person here and change the price. Everything is expensive now” which was shocking to hear considering the initial price we were given.

Was in the Taupo area for a 4 day long weekend and my fly rod was looking a bit worse for wear, plus I had no luck on the water. Popped in to Rod & Tackle for a look and was greeted by 2 friendly and knowledgeable guys. The store had a great selection of top quality gear. I'd heard about this Euro Nymphing business going on (or should I say Czech Nymphing, as one of the guys is from there) and I ended up walking out with a great deal on a new Euro Nymph setup (wife approved). Bloke who served me was knowledgeable and friendly. Sold me a shimano rod for jigging and a few Pat Swift jigging set ups with three flys attached where I could attach my own clip on sinker on the bottom and clip to my fishing line at the top of the rig. Makes fishing a bit easier for those of us that don’t tie & knot our own… I caught a trout on my inflatable nifty boat with 5hp Yamaha engine two days later just off Motutere Point, Taupo, with my partner and little 4yr old daughter on board.
