One of the few depressing things about living in Northland is the absence of South Indian food. Nearly all Indian restaurants serve rich North Indian food. By contrast, Auckland - especially the suburb of Sandringham - has many South Indian restaurants, many of them incredibly tasty and cheap eats. So, on a visit to Whangarei, we were thrilled to find Khane Barhar South Indian Maunu. It's a utilitiarian kind of space and not the kind of room for a romantic dinner, but it's pleasant enough and looks very clean and new. We ordered a masala dosa platter ($25) which was incredible... a large/long dosa with idli (rice cake), a kind of Indian pancake and several others that I forget the name of, plus sauces/condiments. We also ordered pav bhaji, an Indian street food made of spicy mashed veg with buttery buns... not healthy but extremely yummy! ($17). We couldn't get through all the food in a sitting and we thought it really great value and a real culinary blast. I've eaten variations on these menu items in Auckland many times but Khane Bahar had its own twist. The food came out promptly and there was entertainment in the form of Bollywood videos on a TV. For me, the only slightly bitter note was that the waitress was busily talking on the phone (for quite some time) as we were settling our bill and I didn't get a chance to compliment her on the wonderful food. It would be even better if they were just a bit friendlier, but that's a small point. I'll definitely be back!

Came in this evening looking for a good spot to get our dosa fix! We ordered onion bhaji, the masala dosa and the maysar masala dosa. The service was so friendly and there was calming music playing throughout our meal. The dosa was huge and truly delicious. Great value for money and tasted really authentic. Thank you to Khane Bahar - we will definitely be back!

These days Google reviews are so important for business so I want to speak from my own experience. I have been to Khane Bahar South Indian plenty of times now and have not had any issues. I did takeaway yesterday, but for those dining in the carpet and tables looked clean and their certificate in the door I saw while waiting was exactly the grading you'd want to see. I enjoyed the vegetable kathi roll combo I got with a can of drink and had some roti too. Their paratha and naan are also a very good size and I can't say I've had problems with chewiness as a previous review has stated. Really happy with having so many great food options in the Maunu...

Easy online ordering system, ready early to pickup, food piping hot when we got it home, order made beautifully, big size curry special great value for two, comes with free rice, peschwari Naan sweet and beautifully soft and full of coconut, nutsvand cranberries, lamb korma medium a beautiful warmth for our white palates, the lamb was super tender and fell apart (with no fat or gristle at all) the korma sauce was delicious and just what we hoped for. Hope lots of Maunu locals support this great business right on...
