Lunch special... Superb value and food

We are lovers of Indian food and we could not believe our luck stumbling onto this gem in Mosgiel. What’s even better is that they have the most amazing lunch special (a veritable feast) for $10. This is the best deal we’ve found in several months of searching in both Dunedin and Mosgiel - $10 goes nowhere in these parts (in fact prices are so off-planet we’ve almost given up eating out). Highly recommend you bring your dosh out to Black Pepper and really enjoy yourself for the money, we certainly did.

The lunch special consists of an excellent selection of crowd-pleasing mains (rogan josh, butter chicken etc) accompanied by fresh naan bread and steamed rice (both good sized servings). The service was splendid - fast and friendly staff. We were very impressed that our wait-staff came out at a sensible time after the food was served to check if everything was OK - it’s a nice touch.

We were asked if we wanted our food Mild/Medium/Hot - we ordered the Rogan Josh ‘hot’ and the butter chicken ‘medium’ - both were very flavoursome and enjoyable - but if you like hot/spicy food or have been to India, be aware they are catering for local palates and you might need to ask for ‘very hot’. We definitely enjoyed the food and it’s not a criticism - just something to be aware of when ordering.

The ambience is pleasant enough - spotlessly clean and tidy, comfortable dining chairs, quality cutlery. There was Indian music in the background and thankfully no TV.

Highly recommend it for a group lunch - easy to sort the bill at the end - or just a relaxed couples lunch as we did. Drinks were also reasonably priced.

The biggest recommendation is ‘would we return’? -...

First time dining at Black Pepper..and definitely not our last visit! Amazing service, coupled with delicious meals and even a meet and greet from the chef himself!

We were given a basket of pappad upon taking our seats. The pappad was lovely, fresh and crisp!

We ordered the veggie platter for two - absolutely delicious and freshly fried! This came with two types of sauces which were perfectly paired with our starter option.

Our mains were prepared and served within minutes! Freshly made naans (plain, butter and paneer filled naan) with aloo jeera (mild), paneer tikka masala (mild) and chicken madras (mild). All dishes and naans were absolutely delicious!! We opted for a mild version for our dishes and we were quite happy with the taste and heat.

Would definitely recommend giving Black Pepper a try! Situated in Mosgiel, with plenty of table seating options and parking on the roadside. Dining in and take aways are available.

Amazing local restaurant owned by a local family here in Mosgiel. The food is of incredibly high quality and the serving sizes are very good, enough to satisfy even a hungry person. It is the best value meal in Dunedin at lunch time, both eat in and takeaway and has nice comfortable seating and is very clean. Dining in is friendly and private even when busy and the takeaway service is quick with a meal taking no longer than 15-20 minutes depending on what you order. This is a must stop even if you are just travelling through Mosgiel or if you are wanting to go out to a restaurant for a meal. The waiting staff and the kitchen staff are the owners because it really is an original family...
