If it wasn't for this gem in central otago our second trip to the region in as many months would have been our last. Even in these times when it is hard to find even enough staff just to operate the Merchant of Clyde has an excellent crew that are friendly, inviting and informative. No one minds waiting a little when they're told it "may" take a while for your order and let me tell you the wait wasn't really long. Queenstown operations should look to this well run ship to get at the very least some idea of what hospitality means.

Now for the food. So, we stopped here on the Saturday on the way to Queenstown and decided to come back on the Sunday because the service, the food and the coffee was just that great.

To the team and management of Merchant of Clyde be very proud of what you are doing and please keep doing it for the sake of the reputation of hospitality in New Zealand.

Personal note, Cheese rolls are to die for, worth every cent, so are the scones. Perfect. Ps three cheese roll in the photo it's only the last little bit... Sorry I...

Takes a lot for me to write a review, let alone a negative one.

Popped in for a coffee earlier this week as my usual haunt across the road has closed. Dreadful. Coffee was bitter and over-extracted, undrinkable, even with a sweetner in it. Took it back to the counter and asked for another, explaining why. No apology or acknowledgement that I thought something was wrong with the coffee. Barista's (and I use that term loosely) suggestion was I have a coffee with a single shot (as if that would solve a poorly prepared coffee). Another coffee was delivered and it was slightly better (less bitter) but after two sips, I couldn't drink any more and left. Two hours later I still had the bitter taste on my palate. Really not good enough given how much is charged for a coffee these days! Very...

Incredibly rude barista made for a disappointing experience. We stopped for quick bite to eat and were told when ordering food and drinks there was quite a long delay with the coffees, my friend requested in that case if it could be in a takeaway cup (as we were going to leave as soon as we finished eating). To which the barista commented about her not saving the environment. My poor friend tried to explain we didn't have much time and she does have a keep cup but it's in the car, and felt like she'd been told off and came away feeling very embarrassed and upset as she is usually very conscientious about that sort of thing. Soup of the day was delicious with lovely bread but the vegetable fritata muffin thing was very bland and not...

WHAT A GREAT PLACE TO MEET UP WITH PEOPLE CENTRAL TO EVERYTHING IN THE TOWNSHIP SUCH A RELAXING ATMOSPHERE , WHERE YOU CAN TALK & LAUGH WHILE ENJOYING A MEAL OR MAYBE JUST TO TAKE TIME OUT FOR COFFEE OR TWO .. OR WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE TO DRINK OR EAT .. THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE EXPERIENCE , WHICH WAS NEVER PLANNED ...WE HOOKED UP WITH A COUPLE WHILE WAITING IN LINE TO PLACE A ORDER & THEN SHARED A TABLE WITH THEM & LEFT THERE SMILING , KNOWING THAT WE WOULD DEFINITELY RETURN THERE ... WE CALLED IN THERE AFTER TRAVELING FROM ALEXANDRA , WHERE WE HAD STAYED THE NIGHT , AFTER FROM TRA ELING UP FROM INVERCARGILL ... DEFINITELY A HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TRIP FOR THE WIFE & I

I think this is the only café in Clyde - good (slash maybe the only) option to get your caffeine fix. Although I didn't have caffeine on this day because it was stinking hot - I had a mango smoothie instead with a grilled panini I think it was. They have outdoor seating (some with shade and some not) in the back garden or in front of the café and also a slightly fancier area for dining in the evening. They also sell jams, pickles, relishes, etc.
