Let me start by saying that La Catrina is brand new and most likely still finding its footing. As such, it's not fair to be overly critical of our experience there. Nonetheless, I'll offer what I believe is a reasonable review of our lunch given they have just recently opened.
My wife and I went for a Sunday lunch to check out the place. We had spoken to friends who were there for dinner a couple of nights previous and their assessment was that La Catrina is "okay".
When we arrived, there were no customers and three visible staff (presumably more in the kitchen). We were nicely greeted and welcomed right away. Service is in Spanish and very friendly and professional. The menu is not extensive but it covers the core offerings that you'd expect at any Mexican restaurant. Drink prices are very reasonable and my wife and I opted to have beers.
Once we ordered our meals, the server immediately brought out freshly homemade tortilla chips and a salsa verde. The chips were excellent but the salsa was very mild and thin. Suggestion: a nice homemade salsa fresca would be a great addition!
I ordered the Tacos Calle (three tacos: beef, chicken and pork) and my wife ordered Tacos al Pastor (three pork carnitas). All were served in double soft-corn tortillas (you can specify flour tortillas if you prefer). Each dish came with three salsas (one of which was the salsa verde). The other two salsas were mildly spicy and moderately flavourful. More kick/picante would be appreciated!
The three meats in my tacos were good but not great. The chicken was a bit dry and none of them had amazing flavours. The meat in my wife's tacos was better and more tasty. Unfortunately, none of the tacos had any additions. A few greens would add some good crunch!
Service remained very good and attentive. The servers were very friendly and helpful. While we were there, two more tables were served and once again, the servers were very prompt and attentive to the new customers.
The decor / ambience is simple but very pleasant and certainly they are following the Mexican theme.
All in all, our lunch was very good against the background of a newly opened restaurant. The servers are great. The place is very nice. Ideally, with more time and experience, the team there will be able to elevate the food and flavours to match the rest of the La...
Read moreWe recently visited this newly opened Mexican restaurant. First impressions were positive — plenty of parking and friendly waitress who made us feel welcome. We were served complimentary chips as an appetizer, which was a nice touch.
For our meal, we tried the nopal salad and the veggie fajitas. The nopal salad had good flavor, but the cactus could have been cut into smaller pieces for better texture. The veggie fajitas were tasty but felt overpriced for what we got — though to be fair, the pricing seems consistent with the area. Portion sizes overall leaned on the smaller side.
One downside was the presence of a few flies that we had to keep swatting away during our meal.
We also ordered two of their special margaritas, both of which had a “past” or off taste — possibly not fresh. We sipped them because of how much they cost, but ended up not finishing either one.
A small but unfortunate detail: the tortillas served with the fajitas came in a bowl lined with paper that had dye on it. The dye transferred to the last tortilla, we did point this out to the waitress (didn’t eat the last tortilla).
Despite the issues, the service was kind and attentive, and I’d be willing to give the place another try to explore more of the menu. Hopefully, with time, they’ll work out the kinks.
We did enjoy that they had veggie/plant...

La Catrina is a new charming Dine-in and outside-seating Mexican restaurant serving breakfast and dinner. Our group of seven adults were greeted by the friendly owner and attentive staff and invited to a lovely menu of Entradas, Ensaladas, Platos Fuertess & Tacos. We started with refreshers-daiquiri (mango), margarita, lemonade and beer and munched on complimentary homemade tortilla chips with a mild salsa verde. Our main orders were taco (Al Pastor), chicken enchiladas, burritos and heavenly flaming fajitas. La Catrina proved a lovely Mexican restaurant with catchy indigenous decor, friendly atmosphere and fair prices. La Catrina is a wonderful addition to the charm of Coronado’s...
