We used to love visiting this ice cream cafe to relax and enjoy. It was one of our favorite spots in the neighborhood, until the unpleasant experience we had yesterday.
Although we do not speak Polish, we have never had any issues ordering in English or simply pointing at items on the menu when there was no one speaking English. It is worth noting that a significant portion of the community in this district are expats, many of whom also speak little or no Polish.
Yesterday, my wife and daughter went to the cafe to have some drinks when I was at work. My daughter tried to order a vanilla ice latte in English. The employee wearing glasses replied, “I do not speak English.” Fair enough - not everyone can speak English. However, my daughter then simply said “Vanilla Ice Latte,” which is clearly available on their menu and doesn’t require any language skills to understand. The employee repeated the same phrase and added something in Polish that my daughter couldn’t understand, except for the word “Polish.”
At that point, my wife asked if he really didn’t understand any English, and again, the same response. Instead of calling a colleague for assistance, he chose not to serve them at all. Another staff member who had been watching the conversation stepped in and offered help - but by then, my wife and daughter were already leaving, disappointed. Later that day, I went back to the cafe with my wife to understand what had happened, but the same employee was not there. Now I am left with two questions:
a) Did he really not understand the phrase “Vanilla Ice Latte” - or did he simply not want to serve an English speaker? b) If he truly didn’t understand English, why didn’t he ask his colleague who understood English behind him for help right away?
If you are not a Polish speaker, be aware that you might not receive service here - and it could easily...
Read moreCustomer service is at the lowest level. Today, one of the employees, unfortunately, under stress I didn’t specify her name. She became very rude because I spoke to her in Polish not good and /or I couldn’t understand everything what she said me. I’m shocked, she handed me the receipt for paid order and then she began to tell me that I should speak to her only in Polish!!! When I started to speak in English, as I’m here in travel only, she turned around and went away!!! I have never was in such a situation before in other countries. Thanks to her partner who came up and smoothed over the conflict. The ask is to this caffe management /HR team to pay attention to this case and select work personnel who will provide services at a decent level, regardless of the country and origin of...
