I left this place feeling very annoyed. The team around Hugo has to step it up a few notches to make people want to repeat the experience at this price. Cannot recommend this as it is.
AMBIENCE: Good things first: The view is great with an outdoor vibe (which made it more difficult to understand that our very small dog was refused at the door). However, there was very dominant balkan disco music throughout the evening. We asked repeatedly to turn it off or down. If you wish people to focus on the gastronomic experience, there is no music needed. If you need to have it, then choose ambient, non-intrusive music. The music was an absolute nogo and made us want to leave right away.
FOOD: I appreciate to not have too much choice, but to not have any is unheard of. I have been to many gourmet restaurants around the world, but this I have never seen. You not only cannot choose, but you also don't know what you will get. Then, the price tag of 60EUR for a 4 "moments" meal with NO amuse bouche is hefty. The food itself was very good and beautifully arranged, with mostly local ingredients. You can build on that.
DRINKS: Wines were very good. However, it's another no-go in these times to not have any non-alcoholic options that do not destroy the flavors of the food (coca-cola and orange juice, really??) How about a homemade lemonade, tea, kombucha, kefir? Drinks are part of the gastronomic experience.
SERVICE: we asked for two glasses of wine. Even though we were the first guests, the bottle was already almost empty and she poured a quarter glass. After complaining, they corrected. The other personel including Hugo were very friendly, but the wine service needs to be improved. Why not leave the bottle on the table, to not create this dependence?
we should have followed our intuition and left when they would not accept our dog that goes completely unnoticed and could have saved these 300EUR. It's a shame, I was hoping to discover a new gourmet experience close to home to recommend. Hopefully, they are still learning and...
Read moreMy husband and I dined at Naperon this week during a weeks holiday in Odeceixe. We were recommended the restaurant by Catarina, the owner of Monte Coast West and it met and surpassed every single expectation. From the moment we walked in we were enveloped in a world that Chef Hugo has so elegantly created. A small number of tables overlooking the hotels small pool and in the distance the hillside and windmill - it’s a magical location totally hidden from the road. You need to be looking for it to find it which only adds to its charm. We were greeted by our server and the concept explained to us - we chose the 7 moments and without the wine pairing were recommended an incredible bottle of wine by the knowledgeable and lovely sommelier. The couvert was the first to come out - delivered by the chef himself. It blew us away - 4 magical morsels, different flavours and textures including a watermelon gazpacho that was incredible. From there the next 6 moments (plus a magical bread course) were a riot of flavours - a journey truly curated by the Chef elevating simple fresh local ingredients to something totally new and different. We left genuinely giddy from an incredible meal, totally unexpected in this beautiful corner of Portugal. We would highly recommend to anyone who loves great food and is willing to put their dining experience in the hands of this very...
Read moreFor a Michelin star restaurant, I was honestly disappointed. This was our fourth such level of restaurant in Portugal and was notably more expensive and less tasty than our other Michelin starred experiences.
It is a price fix menu with options for a 7 or 4 course meal. You can opt for the wine pairing or get yourself individual glasses or a bottle of wine if you choose.
As you would expect, the prices are elevated in keeping with the quality of the dishes. The waiters were friendly and professional but very stressed as there are not enough staff relative to customers.
The food was good, but we had better dishes at normal restaurants in the area. The wine pairing was a haphazard mixture of pours. They had explained a glass of wine was meant for two courses but that was not what we experienced. At times we were literally given tablespoon sized pours “for the fish”.
One member of our table wanted to choose a glass of wine over the pairing but she was only given very small pours despite us repeatedly stating that she was not part of the wine pairing and only wanted a normal glass of wine.
I would have given it a 4 star however we were inexplicably overcharged 25E on the 4 course meal which was only noticed after we had...
