Read moreOn a quiet rainy afternoon in Caminha, it was easy to resist the outdoor bistro chairs in the praça. I am so happy we spotted the sign for Casa Almeida, which pointed us into a Sporting Club and up the stairs. A cozy room with delicious desserts in the display case, and beautiful and interesting concoctions on the shelves: compotes, honeys, and hot sauces made by the chef.
Lunch was delicious: we each had the barley vegetable soup, and then I had pork and bean stew (feijoada), while my wife had the best arrowz de tomato she said she's ever had, with plump, airy, fabulous bolinhos. The chef/server was friendly, bilingual (at least -- I suspect she can hold her own in Soanush, as well as the Portuguese and Englush we heard), and somehow managed to chat up and feedseveral tables without losing her stride.

No question, they have among the best and most affordable breakfasts in town!
This is the place that will also have real vegetarian, vegan and gluten free food and deserts (which is difficult to come by in northern Portugal). If you have dietary concerns you will be safe at Casa Almeida.
Beside the best breakfast in town, there is a great diversity of daily menu entrees with rich soups that changes throughout the week. Everything is delicious (even if a little bit more expensive, but you pay for what you get).
And the brownies, cookies and other deserts are truly delicious and memorable.
