Very good place for traditional Portuguese food. There is limited outside view from most indoor tables (which is a shame, since the place overlooks a beautiful valley), but the wooden cabin vibe still makes it cozy and enjoyable. Service was attentive and friendly. The goat was properly made, crispy and tender, with tasty roasted potatoes. The boar is a fairly small portion of flavorful earthy meat with pleasant mushrooms and chestnuts. The juniper rice is a very soupy and meat-rich rice, with a slightly acidic flavor that works well. The soups were just ok, and the dessert menu was underwhelming, leveraging industrial ice-creams. We had the house wine and it was also not great, although surprisingly pleasant as a match for such an intense meal. I will certainly come back when I return to Serra da Estrela.

On a side street that leads nowhere, you will find Varanda da Estrela. You will see the warm and welcome looking patio before you go uphill again. I came upon this place with many people sitting, eating and laughing - both inside and out - that's usually a good sign. The menu is approachable while not being too varied - there's a clear direction in mind and they do it well. I was welcomed with a tasting of olives, peppers and soft cheese with bread and oil and vinegar, and a menu in English when they realized I wasn't from here. Everything I had was very good. I highly recommend the Ratatouille - I got it as a side dish - I'd come back for an entree of it. Welcome to being welcomed.

Well…looks promising at the beginning. We’ve tried to get a table the before and it was fully booked. We came back today- first disappointment was they run out of the juniper rice ( this is what we came for.,) The kids liked the lamb meat with the chestnut for me it was a bit dry. The other beaf casserole was dry as well. The small potatoes as side is so boring. Like someone threw them inside. I had the cream brûlée for dessert- just don’t. There is no connection between cream brûlée and what i ate. Suddenly Pizza Hut sounds like a reasonable replacement…

Boa noite,

We found this gem of a restaurant as it was only a short walk from our hotel. Spent a few hours during a hot afternoon with very reasonably priced drinks. Returned later on in the evening to try the food. Absolutely delicious. We had the stuffed mushrooms and the sirloin steak. Both were cooked to perfection with the steak well seasoned. The menu is in multiple languages including English, but there was no real worry as the staff speak English and were happy to go through the menu. All the staff were very welcoming and friendly and we felt very comfortable there. So much so that we returned yesterday for another steak! The portions are very large and very good value for money. Definitely recommend this venue to anyone looking for a pleasant evening dining. I do recommend booking ahead as the place is very popular...
