O Alambique — Restaurant in Lagoa

An easy to find small restaurant in the middle of Lagoa where you can get good food for little money. We ended up getting there on a very quiet day as it was the start of the celebrations of the island's patron saint, so everyone was in Ponta Delgada!

We were served quickly by the friendly waiting staff. Especially the waiter speaks English excellently and we ended up having a fairly long conversation with him, as he was all too willing to talk to us about our and his travels abroad, our stay on the island, tourism and what it's done for the island, and more.

The food itself was great- we both chose the house special, a beef and potato stew with cinnamon which was a real eye-opener for us! Up until then I'd never considered putting cinnamon with beef, but I guess that's why I am not a chef. Desert was good, and although the selection consisted mostly of ice cream made off-site there are several choices of desert that are made in the kitchen, too.

In all, I can highly recommend the restaurant to any tourist (though I can't remember whether or not there were vegetarian options on the menu, the chef herself is one so there probably will be!) looking for a...

Sao Miguel offre une multitude de bons restos donc tentez votre chance ailleurs, comme dans l’excellent Restaurante Associação Agrícola de São Miguel. Je m’explique. Pour combler l’attente des plats (~45 minutes) nous avons opté pour le pain (bon, frais) et une assiette d’apéros mixtes - beurre salé, rillettes de poisson (bonnes), pâté de boudin noir (bon) et deux tranches de fromage (local). Une de ces tranches était en fait la croute simplement retournée. On en a rigolé car notre l’a mangée avec la cire et le plastique. Rétrospectivement on aurait dû le signaler. A son honneur, la cuisine travaille surtout avec des produits frais. Les poissons du jour sont montrés fièrement à la commande. Ma critique culinaire s’oriente sur ce qu’on en a fait: le poulpe à la lagareiro et le poisson (boca negra) ont été cramés au point qu’une partie du plat a dû être jeté. Dommage car la cuisson de la partie intérieure montrait un produit de bonne qualité. Si jamais vous vous décidez pour une cataplana comme nous, prenez des frites en plus ;-) La version de cette maison est une grande soupe qui contient deux poissons, 1 ou 3 patates (selon si vous me croyez ou le propriétaire) et qq onions et poivrons. Disons que le Portugal nous a habitué à mieux et plus généreux. Si jamais il y avait deux poissons entiers, ils étaient nettement plus petits que ceux montrés à la commande. Mon épouse a eu l’audace de demander qq patates en plus, ce qui nous a valu une réaction émotionnelle surdimensionnée du propriétaire. Après nous avoir traité de menteurs, il voulait être payé immédiatement pour nous mettre à la porte. En résumé, déjeuner dans un restaurant moyen, assez cher avec un bon goût...

This was a very lovely restaurant in Lagoa, probably my favourite of the ones we visited in the local area. It wasn't too busy when we visited, and the waiter was very attentive. He showed us the fishes of the day on offer, and also explained the menu, including the dish of the day, in detail. I enjoyed the dish of the day, which was a beef stew with potatoes and sweet bread. It was flavoured with cinnamon, following an old traditional recipe, which was very nice.
