Rabaça — Restaurant in Lagoa

Regarding food, dish of the day (pork ribs today) was microwaved along with the rice and fries which the chef shamelessly does in front of all customers as it is an open view kitchen. Some fishes are fried on site and not microwaved however. The male owner of this restaurant is a scammer. We saw him speak english before with other customers but when it came to discussing the bill with us, he suddenly couldnt speak English anymore. Didnt return us the exact change and saw that we are tourists and charged us for food we didnt order. Regarding hygiene, the owner has open food lying everywhere around his desk/bar which is put next to the dessert which customers order. The whisky bottle- black label (even though i didnt order and couldnt help but notice) was so light in colour behind the bar than what is should look like- which makes me think that the bottle has water mixed in with the whisky. We’ve been looking for a local restaurant and so we’ve entered this one. The owner and his wife were super nice to us. The very first evening we’ve had just a glass of red wine but the owner gave us the pineapple and cheese as well. That’s why we decided to visit the restaurant another evening and have a dinner.

The second evening we had two different fish with local bread and potatoes. The food way delicious!

Eventhough the owner doesn’t speak english, he tried superhard to explain everything and to make sure that we are happy. That was lovely.

We wanted to try something local to understand how people live here and what do they eat and like. We’ve gotten exactly that in this restaurant and add to that we’ve had a great time thanks to the owner and his wife. (We didn’t want to try anything shiny that feels more like a tourist trap.) This is home made food as you will eat at your grandmas home (if your grandma was Portuguese from Sao Miguel) Well done and not pretentious. The flavors are how they should be and the quality and freshness can’t be better.

I have been 4 times in 6 days.

If you are a pretentious d.. and can’t appreciate the simplicity of this island, that makes it’s beauty, you don’t deserve to eat here. It’s simply above your capacity to understand this type of cuisine.
