Praça Velha — Restaurant in Machico

The sangria was excellent, but I should confess I have been a bit disappointed by the main course. The roasted meat (brochettes) was a bit dry, and the cod fish of the house was just average. The shrimp with garlic didn't tasted garlic. They was good, but not something you couldn't cook yourself at home. The garnitures tomatoes didn't tasted very fresh :(

The waiters was kind and nice, but overwhelm by the amount of people. We had been warned while ordering but the overall meal took way too many hours :/

I want to add that it was mother day and they offered a little flower to the two mothers that was present at the dinner, and that was very kind of them....

We are quite surprised to see that this place has a 4.7 rating, as it really doesn’t deserve it. We had: shrimp rice as a main (don’t order it - it’s basically a flavorless rice soup with maybe 5 shrimps in it) bolo do caco (nice but impossible to get wrong) salad (it was fine) a glass of white wine (terrible and the only available option for wine by the glass) passion fruit cake as dessert (probably the best dish - no complaints there) The waiters were also pressuring us to order quickly (we maybe had 90 seconds to look at the menu) as the place was quite busy. Everything about our visit to Praça Velha was exceptional. The food was absolutely amazing— full of flavour, and clearly made with care. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with just the right balance of charm and comfort.

What really stood out was the staff. They were attentive, friendly, and genuinely made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. It’s rare to find a place that gets everything right, but Praça Velha delivered on all fronts. Highly recommended—we’ll definitely be coming back! Amazing views...
