Secreta — Restaurant in Machico

This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve had, not only in Madeira, but probably in the past 10 years. The food took over an hour to come, we ordered burgers and the fries came 10-15 mins after the burger (they were meant to come together). The staff were rude and not friendly. I asked for a tap water (aka a glass of water) multiple times and she brought me a bottle of water. I said no thank you, just tap water is okay. She then insisted to say that I was wrong and this is tap water. What a mess. Definitely do NOT recommend it. The food was below average - especially after such a long wait. The place is small. We came twice here on recommendation for the vegan burger. First time we took the normal (meat) burgers and found them delicious,… not too many ingredients, yet tasty and not too filling. The fries were also yummy. And we also really enjoyed the teriyaki sardines! Second time we came back to try the vegan burger, for which we were a bit disappointed,.. The vegan part was just a lentil purée without any taste… no seasoning or spices just a mushy texture to fill up the burger and stomach. We got dinner here on our first night in Machico and ordered a bottle of red wine with a vegetarian cheeseboard. The selections of cheese that came on the board was really good and paired so well with the wine.

We also ordered the traditional bruschetta as well as the bruschetta with jam and cheese. Surprisingly the latter was extremely tasty!

The chocolate pie is quite nice - the bottom crust seemed a bit undercooked but it’s so thin that it doesn’t feel too weird.
