Cartel 71 Taqueria & Tequila Bar — Restaurant in Peniche

We used to order quite often as take away or go in for a nice relaxed dinner. However, I don’t think we’ll go back again. The price to quality ratio went through the roof. We were two people and ordered one starter (the shrimp aguachile) and three tacos (surf and turf, barbecue chicken and pork) - no drinks or dessert. The bill was 65 euros, that’s expensive even for Northern European standards and definitely way too much for what is supposed to be Mexican street food restaurant in a small Portuguese surfing town. For that price we’ve had one of the best seafood and lobster rice we’ve ever tried at a nearby place. It’s too bad because we do like the restaurant vibes and were always well served. For basically sharing a few starters and some tacos, we ended up spending a small fortune. I rarely leave reviews like this, but having travelled extensively – including in Mexico itself – I was shocked at the portion sizes, especially for the tacos.

For these prices, you’d expect either more tacos or larger ones, especially considering tacos originate as affordable street food. No sauces are included, and when we asked, they were brought over without mentioning there was a charge – later showing up on the bill at €3 per small portion. That’s absurd.

The food itself tastes good, but the experience feels like a rip-off. Yes, local spots are always cheaper, but this level of overpricing just feels unnecessary – plainly targeting tourists who will come, pay, and leave. Prices could be more reasonable, but right now, they’re...

Very disappointing and horrible experience. Owner is quite aggressive and didn’t appreciate us needing extra time to order his words “ok I’m here all night for you just take your time”, never came back again to our table.

The food itself was dry - old El Paso tacos taste better/fresher than food served here. Probably because everything here comes out of a huge freezer in the kitchen. Portions are small, boring and tasteless.

The staff also short changed us the money due to be returned when we paid. We tried to call them to this but were ignored - probably because it was done on purpose.

Following this visit we were unfortunately very sick. We believe this was due to the poor products served here.

I highly recommend avoiding this place at all costs, it’s the worst restaurant I’ve been to...
