Flora (Food & Wine) — Restaurant in Viseu

Well, Viseu, what a hidden gem you have here!!!!! Don’t be misguided by ascetic appearance of the place as it’s just a gateway to an incredible gastronomic journey full of savory discoveries and innuendos. Ask for homemade bread and butter, it’s delicious. You can have a tasting menu of 3 or 5 courses, but we chose a la carte (next time I’m gonna go for the tasting!!!!). Spicy polenta, elderflower tempura with crab, robalo ceviche, white asparagus, yeast ice cream, white chocolate mousse etc - everything was amazing, tasty, creative, thoughtful, I could put much more adjectives here, and it will still not be enough. The chef João is doing great in koji fermentation and all techniques and knowledge of modern cuisine. Lovely Anna manages the service effortlessly and with grace. I believe that for some clients who are expecting a more classic food experience Flora could be a bit challenging, but I believe that if you go there open-minded and ready for a gastronomic adventure, you’ll be granted) Ps: I couldn’t put real power on taking pictures, as the light inside the restaurant was not adding value to the dishes. We found another gem in Viseu and we’re glad we did :-)

This is a cozy and friendly place where Ana and Chef João welcome you with their passion for food. They came from London recently and brought with them some innovative techniques and combinations that create amazing dishes with unique flavors. They use organic and locally sourced ingredients and cook them in a way that brings out the best of each product.

I won’t spoil the surprise by describing the dishes, because they change every week depending on what’s fresh and available.

The selection of wines is vast but from small wineries.

We had a wonderful evening at Flora. Great experience and one of the best meals of the past several years. Very thoughtful dishes with carefully executed made-in-house elements and local ingredients. Truly kind, knowledgeable and attentive service, including in depth guidance into the local natural wines on the menu.
