I have participated in their folkloristic event linked to a typical Tartar dinner. This place also has a separate restaurant, which will be not reviewed here as far as I understand.
While I appreciate the combo, there are several points at a fail, some of them that are easily addressable, starting from the cold environment. There's no one place in the whole of Russia I've visited so far that has a net contrast between the outside and the inside temperature. Here, the entrance hall was cold, almost freezing. We've been asked to wait almost 30 minutes before entering into the dining room, which was slightly warmer but not perfect and yet continued to be unpleasant before the event started due to the people opening the inner door (and the nearby personnel not ensuring it was closed). The manager gave us a small plaid that eased the situation, but it was too late, I guess.
Indeed not being a Russian speaker, I could enjoy the show only visually. The screens with an English teleprompter (appreciated) were not easily accessible from my location.
The show itself was ok, but the choreography was poor (and I've seen several Russian plays and comedies now). I appreciate that the space was not a normal stage, so the actors might have been in difficulty. That said, seeing some of Kazan's legends visually represented was nice.
Dinner wise, I did not have big expectations, which was confirmed by the poor service constantly mined by waiters walking back and forth to deliver portioned food. Surely the u-shaped table was correctly set up not to bring in disfunction to the performance view. The food, prepared in large advance, was just mediocre and the hot potatoes pasty - кыстыбый - were even cold (warming them up would have cost nothing). The broth was just ordinary. The only thing I really liked was their other pasty - эчпочмак. It follows the dessert, a sort of Italian "frappe", that was served with the bread along with the starter (something odd at the very least).
So, in essence, if you have only one night out in Kazan, my advice is to look for some other place to enjoy dinner. If you are looking for a comedy, you might want to try it, but you can probably find something...
