Hillside Tavern Restaurant — Restaurant in Gauteng

Unfortunately what could have been a very enjoyable night turned out to be quite mediocre. Nothing wrong with the food or establishment, but the service left much to be desired.Judging by his knowledge of the menu and skills as a waiter it appeared as if the gentleman who served us had only been appointed the position moments before handing us our menus. Said menus weren't cleared from the table until long after we had eaten our meals. He also had no idea which sauce options, sides or veggie options were available with our meals. When drinks were served he managed to grip both a can and glass in each hand which had to be carefully placed on the table, instead of using a serving tray. Similarly, my draught beer was carried by hand across the restaurant without a tray. Unused wine glasses remained on the table long after the bill had been paid. The bill had barely arrived on the table and he was back holding the card machine. I only later realised that I didn't scrutinise the items on the bill properly as I wasn't given even 20 seconds to look at it. I am disappointed that Hillside Tavern, which we chose to visit for the complete experience, has lost touch with basic restaurant/serving etiquette. Waiting on people is not something that everyone is cut out to do. Hillside Tavern should be more responsible with whom they employ in this manner and provide proper training for their waiting staff. Feb 2024 Had lunch there today. All the tables were full. Considering the amount of people who had to be served things went well. It has become a bit expensive. The seafood is the best dishes, just a pity it has become pricey to order, understandably so. One person had the tongue and enjoyed it. Generous portion with loads of mustard sauce. I had the Trinchada which was soft. The mash and green beans were my favourite. Still a good place to go. It can be noisy and echoey. Not the stalwart value it has always been, more difficult now to go for a normal meal as the choices under R 100 is limited and you are in for at least R 150 pp per plate, and more likely R 200. Compared to many still a good deal. Would love smaller portions of a meat plus veg , that one can have more often. It was the deluxe home food that was always special. A one person seafood plate for R 150 would also be welcome.

2023 Enjoyed a 90th birthday event at Hillside Tavern today and the staff was friendly and helpful, the food was prepared with care and we were allowed to bring personalised cupcakes with us, Hillside Tavern helped make the event a great success!

Always enjoy the food. No pretense, just good, reliable service and food. So happy that one can have plain cooked meat and veg that is prepared well. Enjoy sitting at a table with a table cloth. Please support them, we want to be able to visit them for...

I am compelled to write this review in response to the outrageous and completely false claims made by a previous reviewer. I have been a regular at Hillside Tavern for years, and I can confidently say that it is one of the best establishments in town.

Contrary to the previous reviewer's claims, the service at Hillside Tavern is top-notch. The staff are friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu and drink selection. I have never had to wait long for my food or drinks, and the servers always make sure that my glass is full and that I have everything I need.

The food at Hillside Tavern has always been excellent. The menu is diverse and offers something for everyone, from classic pub fare to more upscale entrees. I have tried many different dishes, and every one has been delicious. The portions are generous, and the prices are very reasonable.

I am not sure what kind of experience the previous reviewer had, but it is clear that they were not telling the truth. Hillside Tavern is a wonderful place to grab a meal or meet with friends, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great dining experience.
