Wow! What a horrible experience.
I am a vegan, which is arguably a difficult diet if you're not too familiar with it. My family and I figured we'll give Nando's a try since they have these new plant-based, vegan-friendly meals. When our meals were served they all looked decent except for one thing. All the plant-based meat substitutes on my plate looked way too meat-like (and exactly like on my family's plate with the real chicken). It was almost like they forgot that my meals were ordered in the plant-based version (even though they put the little "plant-based" flags on the plates). So I went ahead to check with my fingers and I was unfortunately right. The "plant-based chicken" was only plant based because it was fed with plants. But it was very much a real chicken they served me.
Therefore, I approached the manager and told her that they may have made a mistake and served me the wrong meal. But she just went ahead and argued that those were the plant-based version of the wrap and veggie salad that I ordered. She even went to the length of showing and reading me the recipe of what the plant-based "meat" was made of. So I took the chicken pieces apart with my finger so she could see the meat fibre. But even then she still insisted and said that I was wrong. However, eventually she refunded my meals.
Additionally, my wife said that the kids' meals were also prepared with peri-peri, so my kids ended up finishing their meals without eating the chicken, because it was too hot for them.
I'm hoping this review is going to get to the higher management, and it will help to improve their service. I believe there were a lot of teachable moments here.
Finally, could I please suggest just one thing when it comes to vegan/plant-based meals (mind you, this is only my personal opinion). Please stop trying to prepare the same dishes for vegans as you would for meat eaters. Is the fake meat, fake cheese, fake sausage and fake bacon really necessary? (I mean, you wouldn't serve non-alcoholic beer and wine at an AA meeting, right?) There are a ton of recipes out there for inspiration with the right ratio of protein, carb and fat, and without additional fake products.

But because there is so much inconsistency across Nandos branches (sometimes they make tasteless brown soup instead of proper tomato relish), I asked if I could get a taste of their relish, to avoid having to eat soup. The manager, Charmaine Nasiyaya, would not accommodate my request. Instead, she suggested that I eat dry pap (because other people do!!!). She did not even bother to address me directly, she spoke to the lady who was helping me, in a language I did not understand, which I found rather rude. I do not think my request was unreasonable, considering the context I have given. Her "f#*k you" attitude was rather unfortunate. Ester (the cashier), on the other hand, was very friendly throughout the entire exchange. She's the reason why I'm giving two stars instead of one. The food was also really nice. When received I confirmed my order with the lady and she agreed it was in order .When we got to our room, the chicken was so dry and completely white with no sauce what so ever. Literally tasted boiled. Thought we could add some sachets of sauce to at least allow us to swallow the dry food but there was only 1 sachet of sauce for 5 quarter chickens. How ridiculous! The rice was dry and hard! Completely disappointed. Went back in the morning to complain and the lady said come back at 1pm when the Manager Solly is there.
