We stumbled upon Die Wielhuis on Saturday in December 2018. From the outside people were enjoying food and beer on the deck overlooking the harbour. It was the atmosphere we were looking for.
We packed and entered the establishment, the design inside was awkward and dated. They told us that the deck was full and we had to sit inside. As we were very hungry we decided to take a table in the corner with big sliding windows. It felt like we were sitting in the neglected part of the restaurant. All the staff's attention were focused outside and even though a table opened on the deck we weren't given the option to move outside. There was definitely something not right in the kitchen, staff looked out of depth and a bit flustered if not bewildered. I can go on about the staff but I am sure it won't the same staff after the holidays, most probably temporary staff for the holiday season.
We had a simple order of cheeseburgers beer coke and waffles. They did not have a cheeseburger option but they said they can add cheese as an extra. So cheeseburgers it was then.
The burgers came without the cheese because the waiter explained, their kitchen menu is for normal burgers only, the grated cheese was in separate small little glass cups of some sorts.
One positive thing I can say is that the burgers were magnificent. Tasted like moms homemade patties. The surprise came when we had to pay. The cheese was R 36.00 per glass cup +/- 30 g each. Wow, did not expect this.
The waffle was soggy and the ice-cream melted before it got to the table. It was a doughy, watery mess on the plate. The waiter told us that the waffle was store bought and heated up from frozen, more like partially resurrected.
They took the waffle off the bill but the R 140 cheese for 80g made up for it I am sure.
I do not suggest you visit this restaurant, there plenty of other options in Gansbaai with better views and great food...

Read moreWe arrived at 16:07........blackboard outside said kitchen closed until 16:00. However, when we started ordering wine we were told the kitchen would actually be closed until 17:00. We ordered wine and the waiter took our food order around 16:50. Two of 3 orders arrived around 17:30. Apparently mix-up in kitchen and I received my food close to 18:00. By that time my husband and daughter have finished eating. Poor waiter tried his best but kitchen worthless and no management. We didn’t dare order coffee. 🙈 Will surely never visit Die...
