We were recommended La Cantina in Stanford from a restaurant in Hermanus. We love Mexican food and decided to give it a try. The atmosphere was fun and rustic. The menu isn’t massive but offers amazing Mexican staples (nachos, burrito, tacos, poppers, etc). The drinks were great and everything was reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and the service was efficient. The restaurant was busy and the waitress let us know that there may be a slight delay in food. This was great as it let us know ahead of time to manage expectations. Even so, the drinks and food came quickly. We will definately be back and would recommend it to friends!

Wish I could give them more stars but my 'full portion' DINE IN chicken nachos were below average and small (pic below of my in-house meal, I didn't get a takeaway). They looked much better than they tasted. *Chicken nachos are one of my favorites as a requent traveler around SA. Unfortunately, my meal was dry and tasteless. A good stop for drinks with friends and if you're not going specifically for food. My local friends also prefer this place as a drink spot as consistent meal quality is not always guaranteed. Not for vegans or gluten-free peeps. The decor is a vibe though.

Loved this little gem in Stanford! The owner, Mark, and the waitrons are all very friendly and welcoming. It feels like you’re eating out at a friend’s house. The food and drinks are also super tasty. Definitely recommend the chilli con carne with nachos, the frozen margaritas, the lager-rita, and the chicken nachos and quesadilla. 100% will dine here every time we’re in Stanford! They’re also dog-friendly which was great.

Wow, what a disappointment this experience was! I was looking forward to since nice Mexican food and specially drove 25 km for the experience. This after La Cantina had done such a great job of advertising and creating awareness through various media channels.

Honesty the only redeeming factor was the frozen margarita that tasted halfway decent.

The setting & decor was done well to create a themed atmosphere - but sadly that was where it ended.

I ordered the Burrito (Chicken) and my daughter ordered the Vegetable Nacho's. The Burrito filling was terribly bland and lacking in flavour - plain white rice with pieces (chunks) of chicken - there was no effort to be in the least authentic by doing "pulled chicken" and maybe spiced rice with some beans or other Mexican veg or spices. I could not even finish a quarter and had to give up due to the utter disappointment.

My daughter's nachos were also extremely bland and the vegetables were more European vegetables in season than any attempt at authentic Mexican tastes or flavours. She also had less than half her portion and she was really hungry.

They also only give a single portion serving of Guacamole and salsa / spicy sauce. That is really ridiculous based on the serving sizes.

Then we ordered churros for dessert to share thinking & hoping that it would not be bad. Well, it was disastrous. The churros were dripping in oil and soggy and parts of the churro were still uncooked & raw. We had to leave after tasting a single churro each.

I cannot recommend this establishment at all for Mexican food.

It is really a pity too as it has so much potential. I would encourage the proprietors to ensure that they make authentic Mexican food with quality and appropriate...
