Really difficult to find a taberna for lunch in LA Coruna. It's a very busy vibrant town with lots of traffic. Most places we visited were not serving food or were located on a busy road. We had almost reluctantly given up. It was a delight to turn the corner of a pedestrian street and discover the beer barrels under sun shades full of people. No tables available outside but inside was just lovely. Rustic brick or stone walls covered in coins balancing wherever they can. Quirky. Terrific service. Estrella Beer brewed on the premises with the barrel's suspended from the ceiling. Diagrams of the process also displayed. The beer was probably some of the best I've ever tasted. Creamy and smooth served with delicious tapas. Lentils - yummy. My husband is not a keen lentil fan but these converted him. Crusty bread with ham and fritatta. Stunning. We then ordered more. Prawns so sweet I wanted to suck the skins. Mixed platter - meats and cheeses. Delicious. Plus more beer. I didn't want to leave. We were the only no Spanish but were made to feel very welcome. I loved people watching too. Many coming for their main meal as the day reached peak heat. Most tables inside filled. One amazingly beautiful lady cooling herself with an outfit matching red fan. I would definitely recommend this place. I left feeling very privileged to have this...
Read moreWhat a great place to taste local galician specialties! The “tavern” atmosphere and vibe, as well as the very friendly and helpful staff, made the whole experience perfect.
The place is super busy, but we found a table without reservation because we got there at 16:00.
We got tapas (half) portions to share and everything we got was deliciously cooked. Pulpo con Cachelos (octopus with potatoes) is a must and it’s the best one we’ve had in Spain -so far! We also tried the Zamburiñas a la Plancha (grilled scallops) -the sauce left us speechless, Chipirones Fritos, Pimientos de Padrón and Croquetas Caseras (homemade croquettes). The bread portion was very generous and the bread itself was amazing.
The plot twist, though, was the “Callos a la Gallega” (a hearty chickpea and sausage stew) small treat that they brought us with our beers at the beginning. Was like an explosion of tastes in our mouths!
Overall, great experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to try authentic cuisine...
Read moreAlthough the food was excellent, I only give rating 3 because I think it was in very "bad taste" that I made a reservation for "A Taberna de Cunqueiro" in "Salon 2", and when we arrived at the reserved time at the restaurant, the waiter announced (in a not very warm way) that the reservation in "Salon 2" was at the restaurant "O Alpendre do Cunqueiro" and turned his back on us. If a person makes a reservation at a certain restaurant, it's the one they want to dine in and not another that the management decides to change. It turns out that my girlfriend had had dinner at "O Alpendre do Cunqueiro" 2 days before and wanted to try the "A taberna do Cunqueiro" because it seemed funnier. Nowhere in the reservation or in the email sent did I see any indication that "Salon 2" was in the restaurant next door. Although the cuisine and menu are common, it's still the customer who decides where he wants to dine and have this gastronomic experience, as he is the customer, that is, he is the one who will pay...
