Just had dinner here last night with my partner and her parents. The aged beef and black rice paella was incredible. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Barcelona.
However, I did not have the most pleasant experience with the service. While we were waiting to be seated, I witnessed the manager (or perhaps the owner of the restaurant) yell at one of the male servers, so I already knew this server was probably in a bad mood.
Unfortunately, this waiter would end up serving our table. I simply asked a few questions about the items on the menu to gauge if what we wanted to order was sufficient for 4 people. Without even answering my questions, he made gestures with his hands with the ugliest frown on his face and said “okay come on” like hurry up and order. In addition to this, as my father in law told this server in broken English that he was from Korea (just to loosen up the tension and establish a friendly relationship with the server), and with a stupid smirk on his face the server asked “north or south?” I asked the waiter “¿serio?” And he shrugged and said “es solo una pregunta” while maintaining that racist smirk. I could tell after this moment the waiter knew he had made a mistake because his tone became much softer as he brought out the food and he kept looking over to see if I was glaring at him.
As a person of color from the U.S., I have zero tolerance for this sort of behavior. Had I been alone with my partner during this interaction, we probably would’ve cursed him out and walked out. Thankfully my parents-in-law did not understand enough English or Spanish to realize what was happening and I did not want to cause a scene in front of them.
I understand working at a busy restaurant can be tough both emotionally and physically, but the way this waiter treated us was simply unprofessional. I think this waiter needs to be retrained or sent to the kitchen where he doesn’t have to interact directly...
Read moreThe worst restaurant i have had so far in Europe. Food quality / taste is so so. But the restaurant price is not cheap and serving smelly mussels. Also when the time i arrived is around 5pm and there are still a lot of tables. But they gave us the corner next to the kitchen. I feel like they discriminating Asian tourists.
During three meal, once I realised the mussel is smelly after i gave a bite, I told the staff immediately that the mussels in the paella is smelly and all of them are unopened. I expect they serve us another portion of mussels but they get the mussels back into the kitchen and cook them again. Of course. the second time they serve is even more smelly.
Then the manager named Dina step in by asking the first question before asking us what is happened to the dishes. I told him the situation, and he said the second batch of mussels are new. (with very bad attitude)
But I knew that’s the first batch because I had a bite on one of the mussels and i saw the teeth mark. Also I never see two portion of mussels ever.
They insist that the second batch of mussels serving to us is new, but if that’s the case, then how to explain this restaurant serving smelly mussels twice.
Before checking the bill, the manager pull me away from the customers and scold me. He even falsely accused me screaming to all the staff but i swear i didn’t, what i did is to express the mussels are smelly and telling them it’s unacceptable to recook the food even i told them the food is with smell.
But the manager keeps telling lies that they served two portion of mussels and force me to apologise to all of them staff before letting me to pay and leave the restaurant.
In conclusion, Food quality 3/5 but service and attitude of the staff is -100. The money you spending here can definitely go for a better environment and better...
Read moreIt can be hit and miss with google reviews as everyone’s opinions vary.. what is good for me, isn’t always good for someone else. But sometimes I take the risk… tonight I’m glad I did.
I arrived in Barcelona today, my fourth time in Spain but first time in this city. I am staying at a hotel nearby this restaurant and saw that it was close, it served paella, and the reviews were outstanding.
I was able to arrange a last minute reservation via WhatsApp, and the ever so pleasant Dani responded promptly and confirmed for me that El Glop does indeed serve the best paella in town.
Upon stepping foot inside the venue, Dani recognised me from my reservation text (via WhatsApp) and greeted us with a big smile and warm welcome.
We were sat down almost immediately, in what appears to be a traditional tavern style restaurant. It is homely, warm, and welcoming.
Our waitstaff Mikail and Adriana took orders and delivered our dinner. Both delivered an exemplary level of service which continued throughout our meal.
We had the olives, padron peppers and patata to start, with a bottle of water and some sangria. For our main we had the seafood paella. I can testify, that the paella is VERY GOOD. Mum and I enjoyed each mouthful, wishing we got two servings.
The starters were also very good. Hearty, homely, and full of flavour.
On our way out, the kitchen staff acknowledged us to say thank you and goodbye. That’s not something you experience often!
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the service provided by the lovely staff at Taverna El Glop.
We are in town only for a few days, and will definitely return for...
