Gatuari — Restaurant in Barcelona

Let me start by saying this: I love cats and I have 3 at home. We visited this place in August 2023. First of all, this place is mistakenly reported almost everywhere as a "cat cafe" but it isn't, it's more of a "cat club", a place where you can play with cats and choose, mostly drinks, from a very limited list. I honestly felt quite uncomfortable, there was a heavy silence and a very strong disgusting smell of dirty litter/cat urine which immediately stuck on us (afterwards we had to go straight back to the hotel, because our clothes and hair were soaked in that terrible smell). The air in the main room was almost unbreathable and saturated with that smell, the floor and windows were quite clean but the scratching posts and kennels were full of fur and the litter trays were everywhere and when the cats used them they spread sand and other smell of excrement lying around (open type litter boxes). Even the glass of water and the cup of coffee they give us gave off a revolting smell. I was hoping to at least have a chat with the other couple present but they limited themselves to playing in silence with a cat/being on the phone, the hostess of the place didn't speak English. We left before the set time expired because my boyfriend felt very nauseous. The "market/cat food" room in front is quite nice and...

Really great cat cafe. The best in Barcelona (and I have tried them all). The cats here are the most relaxed because they really care for them, they make sure there are not too many people around, there's enough space for them to play and people don't bother them. The cats' welfare always comes first here.

I wouldn't regard it so much as a cafe, because the cafe experience comes second to having time with the cats. This is what sets it apart from other cafes that are more focused on the 'cafe experience' with tables and chairs. There is no menu, you can just take a drink if you feel like it (and they have very nice ones) which is included in the price.

And of course all the cats are up for adoption, they are all rescue cats. Some are more shy than others but they are all decent with people, they are selected for this. On average they don't spend a whole lot of time in the cafe until they find their forever families, the turnover is high and this is great...

You can book in advance or within the day on their website. I booked within the day of visit at 11am and got a confirmation message at 3pm to visit at 5pm. Once you arrive they'll brief you about some rules. You will be able stay there for 45mins and enjoy one choice of beverage. 🐱

Im just worried of the lack of time since it took more than 5 mins to introduce the cats which I understand is important. Maybe they could start the 45 min. timer after the introduction or Im guessing if you visit the second time you could skip it?

Recommendation: If you are a cat lover and want a quick interaction with adorable cats or want to adopt a cat best friend then this is a place for you! 😁
