Gerri Taberna — Restaurant in Bilbao

We tried other places in the Old Town but kept coming back here. Its not just that the food, both the pinxtos and the larger plates, is so good. Its also that the service, space and design make it feel like an oasis in the overhyped elbow-room only yelling vibe in this part of town. (I'm sorry, but a chunk of chorizo on a none too fresh slice of bread in a corner of a packed bar littered with empty beer glasses and used paper napkins isn't my idea of dinner). Here there's a chance to find a seat, have a conversation and appreciate the food rather than swallow the hype. The cheesecake, which comes wrapped in paper like a Camembert and accompanied by a scoop of ice cream topped with a crunchy ginger lattice and little reductions of ginger and apricot was so good. The food was amazing. We ordered the duck, Iberian shoulder, mussels, prawns and a French toast dessert to share. Everything tasted very good. We particularly liked the prawns and the pork. The French toast dessert didn’t look like French toast but more like a collapsed soufflé which left us a little confused but it tasted fantastic anyway so no complaints there. New (opened in spring 2024), modern and really nice place. Great food and very kind staff. Not your typically hectic and worn down pintxos bar. We were not really hungry and only wanted a light supper. We took a seat, and were thus asked to order larger sized raciones which can be served "to share", whereas pintxos are individual portions only for those who remain standing. Makes sense.
