Balbona Picos de Europa — Restaurant in Cangas de Onís

It’s very local and very casual. We walked into a casual bar atmosphere. Since we are not locals, they pointed us to go into the back area to another bar and restaurant area with wine barrels around us. Another super casual bar atmosphere. For some reason I expected a little better environment. We are here for 2 nights, so we tried cachopo which came with French fries. We also ordered tuna salad. Portions were huge. And they tasted ok but I cannot say they were great as others have stated. Basically, this place has a bar like atmosphere, run by a few young people, nice people, but can’t say I was impressed with their service. Food was good but not impressive. It’s an average restaurant. Nothing special about food, drinks or atmosphere. I have to say for my first night in Asturias, I was disappointed that this restaurant had a google review of 4.6. Come here if you want super causal bar type of place with average service. Since we only tried 2 things, I don’t want to comment too much about food other than that they were good...

A wonderful dining experience! Starting with the warmed bread - a rare and welcome touch in Spain that set the tone for the meal. The owner’s food recommendations were spot on: the grilled squid, suggested over the fried version, really impressed us with its perfectly balanced flavors and just-right texture that let the quality of the seafood shine. The hake with cider sauce was a playful and memorable twist, and the hake itself was beautifully firm. Dessert was a highlight: the cheesecake was moist, firm, and stood out among the many other types we’ve tried across Spain and beyond. The restaurant was beautiful and quaint. We ate outside which was great for us. The very best thing about this fantastic restaurant are the owners and the food they prepare and serve. Mr. Balbona is the consummate host, warm, welcoming and very helpful. Mrs. Balbona, the chef, takes great and fresh ingredients and creates masterful dishes!! We had octopus salad, grilled octopus and a couple of other delicacies, truly one of the BEST meals of our entire trip. Bon appetito!!! Lovely!!! So happy we...
