I was visiting the castle and windmills with my dog. I am a guiri but have lived in Toledo and Madrid. I am used to getting a Menu del Dia for 10-15 euros or sometimes eating in a nice restaurant for a little more. Just the week before I visited Cuenca and ate at 2 bars for normal prices.
I searched my phone looking for somewhere cheap to eat. Google rated this place as €(cheap). When I saw the laidback decor and posters for migas I thought I’d found just what I needed.
I was the first person there at maybe 2 o’clock. The owner/waiter is a CONMAN. I imagine a lot of the reviews are fake becase locals would not accept the prices and quality of food.
The owner was charming and accomodating, saying that I could bring the dog inside and sitting me next to the heater. Again I thought this was the type of local friendly bar that I was looking for.
Because I live in Castilla La-Mancha I knew the migas couldn’t be very expensive. He has photos of a limited range of the typical dishes, queso manchego, migas, pisto, chuletillas and chuleton.
Again, all simple, low-cost dishes I’m familiar with. I imagined they would be very affordable in such a small town.
The waiter basically chose for me. I know I was naive but he frames the conversation like you can choose pisto/migas for a starter then chuleton/chuletas for a main. As he doesn’t give you a chance to look at the menu and he insisted that the chuletas were only a very small dish before you know it he has ordered the €22 chuleton for you.
Like described in other reviews, it came with frozen cubed potatoes and a squirt of supermarket pisto. The migas were mainly just bread.
No mention of prices until the end. It’s obviously a very well rehearsed scam. The plate of migas was a racion size and the chuleton gigantic. So he has made it very difficult to argue that you are being tricked when the portions are so generous.
But I was alone and migas, chuleton, 2 beers and a coffee came to €38. I can only imagine the families of 4 who don’t speak Spanish and the bills they must get! Anything over €20 is too expensive, even at tourist prices. And over €30 is daylight robbery.
I loved the sights there and this ruined my experience of the town a bit. I imagine this restaurant is very popular due to its location. If I can stop any tourists from going I feel like I have done a service to someone.
As a reference point I’d say migas and chuletas on a Monday afternoon would typically cost €11/12 with drink included. The food was not terrible, but I feel that this is part of the trickery. They give you food that would be reasonable for €10 but you are hoodwinked into paying 3...
Read moreThe best ‘migas’ we have tried in our Spanish trip. We loved the place and we will be back very soon! A big thank you to Veronica who is the kindest woman in the restaurant! We loved her advices about the best Spanish traditional food. Location is just perfect, just next to the path you need to take to reach the beautiful castle and windmills of Consuegra. Park the car, enjoy the food and walk around this...
