Restaurante Eclipse — Restaurant in Mont-roig del Camp

Used to be a favorite. It’s ok if you order the black rice or paella, but don’t go astray. We had to change tables because of the heat. It wasn’t easy with the receptionist (maybe she anticipated my review?) We ordered the Iberian ham with the Crystal (crunchy) bread with olive and tomato. We’ll… there was no Iberian nut flavor to the ham, which tasted more like Aragonian Teruel than Andalusia or Salamanca. The crispy bread with the tomato and oil was soggy and stretched like chewing gum. Obviously the plate has been prepared many hours before. My mistake for ordering it. The Main course (I’ve had the black rice many times,’and it’s good) I decided on the octopus tentacle over parmentier. BAD choice! I needed ibuprofen for my pained jaw muscles after that My wife felt sorry for me and offered me a piece of her overcooked grilled fish plate cuttlefish . That turned out just as uncooked and dry. Nice ambience. No one spoke English but through goodwill and by using a mixture of languages we communicated w/o any problem. Food was excellent: fish platter made from catch of the day, superb. The squid particularly was truly epic. Service was fast and efficient. The music was low volume, hardly audible above the murmur of the waves breaking on the empty beach just 30 yards away. I am not giving it 5 stars for a simple reason: we wanted to sit outside but we had to argue our case. Initially we were denied the option (“mosquitos”); then we were allowed to sit outside but only in a specific zone close to the entrance; finally when we sat where we wanted that was accepted grudgingly. Miserable start being ignored at the door. Paella that should embarrass any Spaniard. Almost black and properly burnt at the sides. Contained 6 prawns and a smattering of only cuttlefish (no doubt the cheap option). Wonder if they have a different version for the locals as the restaurant had been packed at the weekend - we were midweek. Davide the waiter was good as gold and sorry for the issues - behaved well despite an angry and aggressive duty manager when we said we were not going to pay for the mains.
