This was very good. We had read all the reviews, and it looked like this was one of the top restaurants in the area, and so we braved the difficult parking and made our way to old town. We got a reservation at the last minute, so I did not expect to be seated out on the porch with the beautiful view. The menu was really fun. Clearly the owners and chef are playful. The menu was full of puns and quirky expressions. “Have a poke around” for their poke dish and “pul-pul fiction”. The menu also had a little bit of everything. Which was great, because my 20-year-old son still likes fried chicken strips, which oddly, they had a version of! Theirs was called the Bollywood chicken. And it was basically… Chicken strips. So he was very happy. The desserts were also super creative. My “happy ending” with the dessert was a nice boozy bit of chocolate tequila that we could have either poured over the dessert or take shots of.
So why is this only four stars? Well, some of the menu items looked super creative, and again, it was quite a variety. It wasn’t continental, it wasn’t Panasia, it wasn’t Italian, it was a bit of everything! And frankly, that’s hard to pull off. So Whereas my daughter’s tuna was very good and cooked perfectly, my husband‘s burger was OK, but not really great. And my rice dish was good. I love it when the bonito flakes dance, see the video, but It was billed as a Jamaican jerk dish, and we often go to Negril, because we are a cliff jumpers, and I know a good jerk sauce, and this was not really a Jamaican jerk dish. I understand that chefs have different interpretations of dishes, but this was more like a curry stirfry than a real jerk dish. overall, it sounded better on the menu than it was on the plate. It’s not to say the food wasn’t good, it was good, but it wasn’t excellent. And from all of the wonderful ratings I expected the food to just be stellar! So this is a very good restaurant with a beautiful view, but it is not the best restaurant in the area. Will I come again? Absolutely. Again, it’s playful, and Interesting, and I’m certain if I booked early enough I could request a table with the gorgeous view. The server was also very good. And again, I love the idea of all the menu items, and honoring different cultures in different regions, they just sounded better than they were executed.
I will end by saying that the prices are very very reasonable! Another reason to go back is that it was very inexpensive for the quality! I imagine that it could be an inexpensive yet very elegant date night for folks with that...
Read moreThere is a monolithic hill in the middle of Salobrena. On top of that hill is a castle. Nestling all around the castle are quaint historic houses and ridiculously steep lanes and streets. However, make it to the top of the mountain, and you'll find La Rocka. Nothing fancy on the outside, but the inside is a wow!
The restaurant is small, cozy, and modern chic. But the thing that smacks you in the face as you enter is that the whole back of the space is a balcony sticking out into the void (well, not quite more, sticking out over the plain below the castle hill). The view is spectacular—out over the ocean and the hills to the North. That would have been good enough; who cares about the food?
But then you discover that the menu is a varied and irreverent take on Spanish cuisine, sprinkled with Film references - "Pull Pull Fiction" and so on. And it's absolutely delicious. Combined with excellent service and a good drinks selection, this is the ideal place to watch the sunset over the mountains.
It was quite a walk to get there, and the food was superb and plentiful, but at least you can pretend you expended all the calories you consumed...
