Gigi's Beach Sotogrande — Restaurant in San Roque

We would normally go to Gigi’s Beach every summer, and this year we finally had the chance to bring our family along. Unfortunately, it turned out to be such a disappointment.

We were sat for about 20 minutes before we had to ask for bread. There were no side plates given, so we ended up using our main plates. When the starter (€29) arrived — it was just a circle of Iberico ham with breadsticks clumped in the middle. We were about halfway through it when the mains suddenly arrived. We had to clear the large plates to the end of the table, with our bread and starter still on them, just to make space. When the plates were finally taken away, the dirty cutlery was left in a pile to be reused, which didn’t feel great.

I had to ask two or three times for ketchup and a Coke before they arrived. The food was average at best, and when dessert came, it was stretched across the table — not even placed in front of me, just put somewhere near me. The wine wasn’t topped up once during the meal. We also noticed other tables looking disappointed, and at one point a server even poured four glasses of wine for a table of only three — just another example of the lack of attention to detail.

Such a shame — in previous summers the food, service, and atmosphere have been fantastic, but this year it all felt sloppy, rushed, and far below the standard we’ve...

Helaas geen herhaling van de positieve ervaring van vorig jaar

Een jaar geleden schreef ik nog een positieve review over dit restaurant, maar jammer genoeg konden we dat niveau bij ons bezoek van deze avond niet terugvinden.

Ik koos voor de zalm als hoofdgerecht. De portie was opvallend klein, met een stukje zalm dat aanvankelijk te kort gegaard was. Na terugsturen werd dit gelukkig wel correct afgewerkt. De vis werd geserveerd met wat rijst, maar deze bijlage was zo beperkt dat het geheel niet voldeed als hoofdgerecht – zeker niet voor de prijs van €28, wat in Spanje aan de hogere kant ligt.

Mijn moeder had de scampi’s en was daarentegen wél erg enthousiast. Perfect bereid, royale portie en volgens haar een echte aanrader. De burrata van mijn vriendin was op zich smaakvol, maar de frambozensmaak overheerste wat en ook hier bleef de portie aan de magere kant.

De bediening was vriendelijk, maar miste wat warmte en betrokkenheid. Bij het afrekenen en verlaten van het restaurant werden we bijvoorbeeld niet meer begroet, terwijl het personeel wel zichtbaar aanwezig was en niet druk bezig leek. Kleine details die toch het verschil maken in gastvrijheid.

We hadden gereserveerd, maar onze tafel was niet volledig gedekt: geen servetjes, geen peper en zout, iets wat bij andere tafels wél standaard aanwezig was. Ook hier dus ruimte voor verbetering op vlak van voorbereiding en afwerking.

We kwamen al om 19u (toen het nog erg rustig was) en aten elk slechts één hoofdgerecht, met enkel een dessertje voor mezelf. Toch duurde het hele bezoek zo’n anderhalf uur, wat vrij lang is voor zulke eenvoudige gerechten en gezien de beperkte drukte.

De locatie blijft uiteraard schitterend, met een prachtig uitzicht en een aangenaam kader. Maar qua keuken, organisatie en service is er sinds ons vorige bezoek helaas een stap achteruit gezet. Hopelijk wordt hier werk van gemaakt, want het potentieel is...

Gigi's Beach, Sotogrande – A Great Spot, But Needs Work.

The location is fantastic, and that’s about it... The place tends to get quite busy and noisy, and unfortunately, the staff often struggle to keep up. The wine list was disappointing - not expecting miracles, but it simply wasn’t up to par.

Thankfully, one of the senior staff members stepped in and took good care of us, making sure things didn’t go off the rails. That really saved the afternoon.

That said, Gigi’s still has the potential to be a great place for gatherings with family and friends. I’ll give it another chance, and hope...
