Bar Restaurant La Orquidea — Restaurant in Valle Gran Rey

Well, after reading some previous reviews I felt I had to do something. This restaurant is a gem with the added bonus of the perfect host (a local village man who's wife happens to come from Germany) who also has one of the finest eclectic music collections anywhere. If you're not the 'typical critical' German tourist, he'll even play the rarest and finest music from his collection. Food-wise, it is old style La Gomera hospitality without any fuss or pretentiousness, simple food done well. Prices are reasonable and justified, considering that everything has to be carried to this mountainside location 'al lomo' (on the back), and you'll appreciate that walking there. Count the steps ! The views, as many will testify, is one of the best anywhere in the Canary Islands, and if you come with a friendly smile you'll never regret going there. Jose might even play your favourite music, once the late mountain breeze has blown the grumpy German tourists away and you've retired inside to the bar for a nightcap after yet another spectacular sunset viewed from their terrace. If you read in the Menu , that they offer paella on Wednesday and the Waiter tells you, they offer today - on Thursday- also paella, you should be more clever than me and not order it, because otherwise you will learn, that you will get the rest from yesterday, just warmed up with poor taste and dry, hardly to enjoy. Nonetheless we would have ordered a dessert, but as the waiter was more occupied in smoking a cigarette instead of asking as - we waited 15 min - we payed without giving a tip. Sad, this place...

Una estrella por la muy buena cocina (recomiendo Dorada). He estado allí al menos 60 veces en los últimos 30 años. Ayer por última vez, porque ayer el jefe volvió a ser tan antipático, o más bien grosero, que eso fue todo para mí. Primero me encargué de pedir bebidas para 9 personas al menos dos veces en 5 minutos, y luego, por un momento, no supe qué guarnición había pedido, lo que me emocionó muchísimo. El servicio también es deficiente en general. Es una verdadera lástima porque por lo demás el restaurante es muy bonito.



Einen Stern gibt es für die recht gute Küche (Dorada kann ich empfehlen). Ich war in den letzten 30 Jahren bestimmt 60 mal dort. Gestern dann zum letzten mal, denn der Chef war gestern zum wiederholten mal sowas von unfreundlich, besser gesagt unverschämt, dass es das für mich war. Erst hatte ich es mir herausgenommen, sage und schreibe zweimal innerhalb von 5 Minuten Getränke für 9 Personen zu bestellen, und dann wusste ich kurz nicht, welche Beilage ich bestellt hatte, was ihn tierisch aufgeregt hatte.
