Food at Comida was extremely good! Really very elegant way of East meets West! We ordered the mediterranean tuna steak and the frango fried chicken. The tuna steak was a very tender cut of the yellow-fin tuna that we ordered medium cooked. It turned out great as it was seared well on all sides but still had a very soft ruby pink middle. It also came with this an amazing herb sauce with herbs fresh from the garden! Truly a farm-to-table experience. The fried chicken was also incredible! Very crispy batter on the outside and really soft and moist meat on the inside. And also did not feel greasy at all. The rice that was served with it was also lightly spiced with curry and was very fragrant.
The chef and owner Damrika (hope I spelled his name correctly) was very friendly. He checked on us to make sure we enjoyed the food and told us about his thought process in creating the dishes. He explained how his past experience working as a cook/sous-chef in well-known hotel chains have shaped his approach to selecting ingredients and style of cooking. At the end of the dinner, he very kindly gave us some mangoes from the tree in the garden.
The place itself had a very relaxed atmosphere. No air conditioning but very well ventilated and cool with fans. It also had a mosquito coil burning to keep away the bugs. The whole place was set up with different small room sections with 2 or 3 tables in each small room. It is a little bit away from the Galle Fort area but was close to our homestay.
Overall given the space and the food, I would also recommend Comida to offer cooking classes, especially for how we could infuse Sri Lankan flavors into regular western dishes. It is hard to cook a full Sri Lankan meal back home since we might not have access to all the spices & ingredients needed, but it would be great to learn how Sri Lankan flavors can be incorporated to give a unique twist - just like the food at Comida! It would be a class I would totally be...
Read moreOur first evening in Galle led us to Comida, a decision made based on glowing reviews that promised an exceptional meal. The restaurant is housed in a charming old Dutch colonial building, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.
We were welcomed by the incredibly hospitable owner, Dhammika, who passionately shared the story of his adjacent spice and vegetable garden and his cookery classes. The food was nothing short of divine—each dish was imbued with the authentic love and warmth of a Sri Lankan family kitchen.
But the evening was more than a meal; it was a genuine connection. We spent hours chatting with Dhammika as he served us, and our son formed a instant bond with his, playing the organ together. In that moment, we didn't feel like customers; we felt like we were home.
Comida is a rare gem, offering not just exquisite food but a heartfelt glimpse into local passion and hospitality. I cannot urge you enough to seek out this hidden...
